Differences of grading services on eBay

Search results for the three major grading companies on eBay:

ANACS: 1,545
NGC: 5,929
PCGS: 10,988.

What's the reason for this big jump between ANACS and PCGS? PCGS has slightly over 7X more items for sale than ANACS!

ANACS was the first company to certify coins for authenticy long ago. Why has PCGS taken the lead? What happened? In fact, I'd think it'd be the total opposite. I'd think most people would want to send their coins to ANACS because of the fact they don't bodybag the coins. In PCGS if you have a problem coin and you somehow miss it on the coin you send they body bag it and send it back ; without refunding your money.

Part of the reason was because the marketplace quickly accepted slabs as being the prefered holder for certified/graded coins and ANACS did not switch from certificates to slabs for almost four years after PCGS started and three years after NGc. By the time they made the switch they had lost most of their market share and were never able to recover it.
  • I agree with Airplanenut. It comes down to the Almighty Buck. PCGS slabbed coins tend to bring more money in the open market than coins of equal grades at the other two main slabbing companies. PCGS is hot right now so it only makes sense that they are the slab of choice for many collectors/dealers. You know, "Give the customer what they want..."
  • I concur with the above sentiments. Very simply, the marketplace (i.e., collectors) decides the worth of the grading services. Since dealers want to maximize their profits, they will tend to go with those grading services that make them the most money. Dealers give to collectors what they want. Also, since collectors can now get their coins slabbed directly (without going through dealers), they also have had an impact on the market. A big part of this is the new "registry set" concept. Some collectors "bypass" this whole process and simply get their coins slabbed by either PCGS or NGC (like me!) just to get them into registry sets.

Concerning ANACS, yes, it is true they blew it back in the mid 1980s when slabbing began. However, they have built a new market niche since then of slabbing "problem" coins.

    It's an NGC/PCGS conspiracy.

Not exactly, or all about the money.
There is a heavy load of modern material that commands a premium in pcgs holders that take up the bulk of the pcgs, Ebay listings.

    BigD5,

The actual number of pre-65 PCGS coins listed as of this moment is 5202, and the number of post-64 coins is 2986. PCGS has just graded it's 9 millionth coin, and about 1 million of them were modern according to the pop reports, so the ratio is higher for moderns on ebay than for the pop in general, but the ratio of classic to modern on ebay tonight is about 2 to 1 in favor of the classics. When you search using the keyword PCGS in US coins, click on the subcategory for dollars and you'll see the pre-65 coins number 1418, and the Sacs, SBA's, and Ikes combined equal 447 coins. image

a useful analysis would compare your percentages from the ebay searches to the amount spent on advertising & promotion of each of these 3 co's. i suspect you'd find the amount of $ spent by anacs on advertising pales in comparision to pcgs & especially ngc, but that's a gut feel, not based on hard numbers.

  • A personal observation from Morgans on ebay....PCGS slabbed coins are mostly common date.
Almost every "tougher" date I may have gotten off ebay has been NGC, because no PCGS slabs were offered at the time I was looking.
