at small schools thinking they can rule the NFL. It won't matter who King Eli is playing for when some
350 pounder snaps him in half! I would say Eli is more Archie than Peyton!

You get drafted by the team that drafts you and you either play or sit, it is all up to you to prove yourself.
Many many parents, agents, lawyers over the years in ALL pro sports have done the same thing; they are just looking out for the best interests of thier son/daughter/player! If you were the parent of the caliber player Eli is, don't tell me you wouldn't be doing the very same thing. I know I would be doing the very same thing to make sure my kid had the best chance to succeed.
Whatever thier reasoning is, at least they are being honest in letting thier feelings be known so the teams can act accordingly; no one is going to lose anything by thier actions; if anything the Chargers will BENEFIT by this decision by getting more for trading down.
No one even knows if the Chargers were going to pick Eli anyway; reports have said that Marty was more impressed by Rivers at the senior bowl & workouts because he reminded him of Bernie Kosar who he coached years ago in Cleveland.
Give the Mannings a break; they are only looking out for the best interests of Eli & his best chance to prove himself where he feels most comfortable.
It sure worked out OK for the Elways when they did it!
Remember:HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY!

The "only" problem I have with that is that it takes away form the org that the player refuses to play with. That is akin to saying I do not want to play for you you suck.
Like I said college players are given to much "pull" especially being unproven in the NFL, or any other sport for that matter.
You PROVE yourself first then you make demands. I mean people do not hire you off the street and give you big money because you did "great" in college or high school. Most companies take you on board with promises if you perform.
With the first pick of the Draft the San Diego Chargers pick Eli Manning and if he doesnt play we dont pay and he can sit the bench for two years until we decide we do not want him anymore.
Thats the way it should be. The Chargers have that right for a reason. Why have a draft then why not jsut ask what team they want to play for and let the College players "draft" the teams.
He admits now that hes being asked about it that he does not feel San Diego is the best fit for his son. Nothing wrong with that, he is allowed his own opinion, and he met with San Diegoes owner apparently and they talked about that before and after the report was made. He never said anything about New York as alot of the early reports have been saying either.
Check out the write up on ESPN to get the story. Youll see it is not nearly as bad as it has been blown up to be.

When it comes to pro sports, you pay for the right to draft that highly regarded pick & take your chances.
Again, San Diego will GAIN by trading down as they will get more in return for giving up the 1st pick.
You can't compare the real world to the world of pro sports; it's apples & oranges.

And I do not want to get into the "sons" like his comment. What if Eli and or Peyton did not want this? Anyho I will be quiet........
im sure Eli is old enough to speak for himself (although judging by the Manning family, Eli might not be able to read yet)
<< <i>Some could say his father cares.. My father and I are tight and I TOTALLY respect his opinion.. >>
Thats all well and good and I never said his "heart" was in the wrong place. Its (like almost 90% of everything) is how you present it. To me that should have been something between Eli and his father. Just becasue you do not "see" it does not mean the support and backing is not there by a family member.
I would feel pretty "embarassed" if my father came public with something (no matter how it got to the public) like that. Its ultimatly Elis decision in the long run. The father should support his son no matter what his decision, and be there if he falls (and possibly let him fall). Not hold his hand and make the decisions for him.

i agree about the embarrasment part. it's ok for your dad to call out your middle school or high school coach, but jesus Eli is out of college
how many 22 year olds take daddy to a job interview?

Christ that brings back memories. My mother used to yell out my name telling me to move over in left field...... Thanks for the flashback..
Boy, give my decrepit old bones a chance to go runnin' out on the field and play for some team. I don't give a crap what team it's is and I don't care if I only get to play special teams. I'd be out there every time I got a shot trying to not only help my team, but loving the fact that I got to do that for a living...
Shame more parents dont get involved like that with their children.
Great memory to have

Again, if you are a parent with a child that has this kind of talent, don't tell me you would sit by & let this child go to a team who for the past many years has shown NO desire to win or even put forth the same or more effort to do so as your child has.
I sure wouldn't want my child going someplace like that whether it was San Diego or Arizona etc.......
All the Mannings are doing is being HONEST so all parties involved can reap the best from this situation. If San Diego still drafts Eli after he has said he doesn't want to be there & that he would sit out; it just proves my point.
They would rather be vindictave & try to hurt Eli rather than draft a player who could actually help them be better.
I applaud the Mannings for thier honesty & thier caring to insure Eli ends up with a team that has shown they are at least trying to be the best they can be.

<< <i>ESPN is reporting that Eli is willing to sit out 2004 if picked by San Diego.. It's confirmed, he's a spoiled brat!! Ungrateful baby!, did he go to school in Miami? I ditto the comment' "screw manning" >>
this comes from someone that like Denver...lol..go figure...the team that had the QB that started it all..yet i doubt if he ever say's SCREW ELWAY !
I agree with bobstar...all these "kids" yelling spoiled...brat....screw Eli....well lemme tell you one thing...i'm a parent, and if i had the chance to help my son stay away from a team that has had only FOUR winning seasons in the last 20 freaking years...reast assured i would do everything in my power to help my son.You can sit and yell this all you want to...but if your a parent and you dont see that Archie is trying to help his son, then i would like to know what your thinking. No way would i let my son go to that kind of a loosing team without me having tried to help him as much as i could.

<< <i>so you shouldnt have a choice as to where you work ?h ow about, if after you graduated college you were put into a pool of all grad's & you had to work for whatever company picks you ? >>
How many people have come out of college "with this kind of talent" and flopped? How many Heisman winners and runner ups produce medicore results?
Again the draft is there for a reason. To try and level the playing field between teams. To make the NFL a "competitve" arena. Not so "Johnny" can hold his breath and play for the team he wants to.
You say "a team who for the past many years has shown NO desire to win or even put forth the same or more effort to do so as your child has" you can back this up how? I do not know any team in the NFL or major sport that has purposely shown no desire to win.
And then on that same note why would you want your child to go to a team where he can maybe pull them up and bring them to the next level?
"If San Diego still drafts Eli after he has said he doesn't want to be there & that he would sit out; it just proves my point."
ehhh? We are not talking about San Diego. This would prove your point above about the "No desire to win comment". No they would play him and if he did not show his "great talent" he would/should be treated just like any other Average player. If he did play and proved to be "great" SD would win (possibly) doing a few things, showing his potential to other teams so AFTER his contract with SD is over Eli should win and SD whould win in a trade. Prove if he is "that" good in the NFL. Prove if he is a "man" and does the right thing.
We are all put in to situations we just dont like but we need/must deal with. Just because you are a "name" doesnt mean you should be able to do what you want.
It is San Diegos RIGHT to draft Eli. It is San Diegos RIGHT to give him a chance, bench him, trade him. Like someone said this is the NFL and it is a business. San Diego is going to do what is right for them. They want to improve their team and by the "draft" if they think Eli is their answer it is their RIGHT by NFL RULES to make him a Charger.
What Eli does after that is when we find out what type of "man" Eli is. DO you take the ball and run trying the best you can proving to other suitors that you can play in the NFL which raises your stock, or do you sit on your arse sucking your thumb pouting and not playing.
"They would rather be vindictave & try to hurt Eli rather than draft a player who could actually help them be better. "
So a QB that is supposedly so great wont elevate SDs game? Wont help the team? So then he is not that great?
I hope SD puts a message across that the players are getting to be a little to big for their britches. Again draft picks should have a "base" salary based on position, a few incentive clauses, and an injury clause for a few ears before they are allowed to say anything. They get picked by the team that has been given the right to pick them by the NFL "rules". That team can do with them as they please for those first "few" years. It is in the best interest of the player and team to "groom" that player for either possible trade and or to elevate the team. The players incentive is what it has almost always been, money, fame, glory. None of this should come BEFORE you have not at least played 10 games in REAL NFL games.
Again why have the draft if players can "pick and choose" where they want to go? Just have all the players knock on the doors of the teams they want to play for. Lets see how long the NFL stays in business.
**EDITED** for some spelling errors probably cant find them all...
<< <i>If San Diego spends the number one pick on a guy who won't play for them, regardless of whether they have the moral high road or not, they will have the RIGHT to go 2-14, and the team will have the RIGHT to get moved to L.A. >>
Yup. That is "their" chioce. The key word is THEIR (being SD), not ELI, Not Archie. And that would send a message to the other teams that Eli IS a spoiled little brat. You take the opportunity that is given and you prove yourself. Or SD trades hims. I dont card if SD make him the place kicker, the point I am making is it is SD choice. Trade, Play, Bench, etc. He is SD's "plaything".
<< <i>Yes, San Diego can choose to draft him to prove a point, but that'd be a bad move. >>
I agree BUT the whole reason Im stating all this is because of "Archie/Eli's" comments that were made public. If all this happened between SD and Eli (with ADVICE) from Archie, and was regulated behind closed doors in a PROFESSIONAL environment I wouldnt care. Eli would expressed to the SD his side and SD would have explained their position. But that is not the way it happened. So now it makes SD look like the "bad guy" and Eli look like a "crybaby". And we can only blame a caring father.......that should have known better.
cardnyou, you sound like the biggest pompous jackass on here. no wonder you like crybaby Eli
By the way, could somebody break the news to Eli that there isn't a better place to live in America than San Diego? Does he know this? Who cares about wins and losses? San Diego has seals! And hot chicks! And 80-degree weather! Somebody remind Eli of this stuff when he's shoveling snow in front of his condo in Hoboken next November.
<< <i>cardnyou, you sound like the biggest pompous jackass on here >>
and that might be so ...... but you doont see me on here calling someone i know nothing about BS names like that do ya ?
