Guess the grade - 1795 half dollar (GRADE REVEALED)

Here's a guess-the-grade Flowing hair half dollar...

imageimage

answer... It's in an ICG-12 holder.

Yeah, the scratches on the front are a distraction, as well as the spots on the back - I've been thinking about sending it to NCS to see if they can do anything about it...

Otherwise, a decently struck small head with (otherwise) nice surfaces.

Hope you enjoyed the post!

I just don't have the expertise to grade this series; nice coin...a crying shame about the scratches.

Fine+ detail but too bad about the scratches on obverse and black spots on reverse.

Nets G6 in my opinion but might be worth VG money

VG-10; surfaces look a little suspect to me (not just the scratches).
  • VG8. Aren't the scratches adjustment marks? If they are than the coin shouldn't be BB for that.

F-15...and pretty hard to find without some sort of distraction. I'd be thrilled to have it in my collection.

i gussed f-12 before looking at any other posts. icg got the grade perfectly correct.

why the he11 do the scratches bother you? if you just can't tolerate scratches on a 209 y-o coin COLLECT SOMETHING ELSE that doesn't get scratches.

I agree with the F12 grade. The small head halves wear differently than other 1795 halves, the hair detail is not as deeply engraved, so a F12 small head will not show much hair detail. But the eye socket is well defined, with good nose and mouth definition. The reverse is clearly a F12, and both sides have strong rims. The spots don't bother me, the scratches appear to be light and will tone over in time. Grading services are justifiably more lenient with these rare early halves.

The three small head die marriages, O.126, 127, and 128, are all more difficult than their current rarity ratings imply. This is 126, the most common, or maybe I should say the least rare. Try to find a no problem VF, it will take years. The small heads are not a Redbook variety but should be.

Earlyhalf - nice score on the O.128! It will look good with your 126.
