1925 Peace Dollar, guessie the Gradie........Grade posted

LucyBopLucyBop Posts: 14,001 ✭✭✭
The coin is in an old 2nd generation (late '80's) PCGS holder and is grossly undergraded at MS64.

What do you think Cats? The coin does look better in person then the images, but, lets hear some opinions on this one....

1925 are notorious for having a yellow patina... they attribute it to setting the coins out at the mint while some chemicals were present near-by...

I'd call it a high end MS65.... mark in the hair at the eye level, in the tiarra, neck by the "T", mark in the tail feathers and by the feet.... I'd have to look at it to see if it had a shot to go 66.... My gut feeling is that it's in a 66 holder after looking at the other photos below....

Peace $ MS66 and above have a certain "look" to them.... Without holding it it's hard to say but by final answer is ms66......

that's of course if it doesn't have any rub on it....

I'm going to say ms65, but I have a feeling that the marks I see in the pics are not as bad as they are holding it in front of you - which would take it to a 66.

Really nice coin - awesome eye appeal!

Nice coinie Lucy. Is it in one of the old rattlers? If so, I'll give it a 65.

If it's been slabbed recently, maybe 63.

Lucy: I love 1925 Peace Dollars because like the subject of this thread, they sometimes come with knockout luster.

Yours looks like a solid MS-64 (shot 65). I think that it would go even higher if not for the luster breaks on the cheek and in front of Liberty's mouth.

Thanks for sharing a great looking Peace Dollar with us! I'm curious to the certified grade... image

Looks 66 to me. Based on the second pics, it appears the "marks" are merely disturbances in the luster, and the coin looks superb.

That's what I'm thinking too. If that's the case there's no way this is less than a 66.

    Solid 64.

The marks on the face and field in front of the face are only superficial.

64 looks frosty but too much chatter in the face and the field in front of the face to go higher. mike

I am going to guess that it is graded MS-66. From the scan it looks like a very clean coin. Very nice coin, Lucy.image

I'd have to guess 65, a little too much chatter to go higher,a beauty though.

OK - with a better screen pic at home, I'd have to change my grade to 65. I think the luster breaks would keep it from 66 - but what the heck - let's see where it lands image

I agree. Anyone can see that it's an MS 65.825, just a small fraction of a point from 66 image

Or perhaps it was properly graded for the times it was graded in. And all the ones now are overgraded. Either way I like the "Look" of the coin and grade is no concern to me. How Much?image

Baley, my point being that perhaps grading standards have changed. Is that good or bad? Each person can decide for themselves.

DHeath, I'll beat that 64 price and pay 65 bid price. Oh my.... what is 65 bid price?image

Liberty got a lot of scratches on her face and in the big field she is facing. Man, I've got raw AU's with cleaner fields and cheeks. Sorry, but 64 is overgraded.
