Why do they consider it cherrypicking when I buy a 1964 proof set for $10 that has an AH kennedy in it that I can sell for $17 and it's fine to spend an hour looking at certified gold that I can usually find an undergraded coin that will make me much money. I would say for the most those people buying the $10 proof sets are not the ones to worry about. mike
probably means he doesn't want someone in the store who will waste his time by poking through bunches of double row boxes , spend an hour or more , ask questions and either buy nothing or some $5 item . the days where a coin shop dude sat and read newspapers and welcomed browsers , has turned into a 'whadda ya want? , here , thanks , have a good day . Similar situations at shows .
Again, these dealers are not very good business people. It is fantastic for generating more business if you look like a guy or gal who has confidence in your product. By allowing people to cherry pick, you are giving everyone else passing by the message that you stand by what you have to offer and that you are friendly to all comers.
I think the vast majority of us have bought an item that we didn't really need from a dealer that we really liked. A successful business is all about REPEAT business. Act like a jerk, and you won't get it no matter how great your product is.
In a sea of dealers, you have to distinguish yourself from the pack. You can do this by being friendly and open to everyone. Word will get around...
I would walk in, ask him if he was serious, and if so - laugh in his face and walk out; with a fist full of hundred dollar bills that I got from the bank just for that occasion.
