For "bust dollars" coined by the United States of America, I would have to say the first year was 1794. (I know some other countries produced dollar-sized coins -- the Spanish/Mexican 8 Reales coins -- which might also be labeled by some as bust dollars.)

The term "bust dollar" is often used interchangeably with the term "early dollar," to describe the silver dollars produced by the United States with the dates 1794 through 1804. Starting with the year 1794, the coins all depict a bust of Liberty, and so even the dollars of 1794 could reasonably called "bust" dollars. In recent times, people have commonly labeled the first style as "flowing hair dollars," and the second style as "draped bust dollars." However, in older texts, the first style was usually called the "undraped bust," versus the "draped bust" of the second style.

So, unquestionably, if the issue is the first year of the "draped bust" dollars, I would say 1795; but if the issue is the first year of "bust" dollars, I must go with 1794!

Daddy Dollars! First year of which is 1794. The "flowing hair" design is still of a bust design. Starting mid-95, they used the "draped" bust design.
