Truckload of pennies
Today I went into this antique store and found this old lady trying to set up shop. She was selling coins. Almost all were average circulated stuff but then I saw something........
She had rolls and rolls of pennies in their original mint wrapper...... She had them all the way back to 1937.
When I asked how much she wanted for them she told me.....
"$1.50 a roll I guess...... They used to belong to my boy, he died last year."
I bought them all. I don't have every mint mark. But I have a roll for every year. I paid her price and hit the door running with all of them. I am still sorting it all out. I never saw such a happy woman in my life.
I get the lucky duck award!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone here know how much a OBW roll from 1937 would be worth?

I will not have my coins when I kick the bucket. I will have sold them and taken some very nice vacations with the money from the coins. I might consider leaving an extra dollar or two to the estate for whoever my junk is left to.
how many rolls did yuo get?
might be best to just sell them on eBay as original, unless you can grade copper very well

At least I think 67 rolls.... I have not sat down and taken a full count.... I just know there is one a year and now two 59-D's
As a curious point I am noticing that I have more rolls of D's than anything else. Only about a 1/4 of them are P's.... hmmmmmmmm

I do feel sorry for her. Just makes me think of stories of what coin dealers offer people who don't know better (and, I know you asked and she told you a price but it is still similar since you do know better).
I am not in your shoes, but if I were, I would probably have told her, "well, that $1.50/roll would come out close to $100, but there are some older ones I really needed. How about I give you $200 for the whole lot?"
Maybe that is why I haven't made $1,000,000 yet.....I am not ruthless in business.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
FAMOUS.....LAST.....WORDS.

I guess she had no idea what she had sitting there.
Had she known I am sure she would have taken those pennies to a coin dealer and disposed of them the right way.
Guess that goes to show people that you need to let your family know what coins are worth otherwise there
will always be someone out there that will take advantage of you.
I have told my family and left it in writing what certain coins are worth. I am sure if they just found my coins
they would sell them for whatever someone would offer them.
IF you feel bad, and Im saying IF (and Im not saying you should or shouldnt be) you can always give the woman a nice "bonus" IF you get a nice score.
For example, you end up selling $600 worth of coins, give her another $100. She is still better off as you did all the leg work etc.
Only IF.

Number #1: Do me a favor. If you score real big, I want you to find out if this old lady is well off or not. If she is well off financially then I am sort of ok with it but not totally.
If she is not very well off, I will request that you keep me up to date on how well you did and I will send her additional money even if you are not able to.
I realize that maybe you might need the money more than she does so I will reserve at least $1 extra per roll she sold you you. It is a start.
Number #2: If you break open those obw rolls you will have then thrown away the lifetime pursuit of a deceased collector and son who spent the last umpteen years preserving our history!!!
You can live with that??? At the very least respect his effort and preserve them as is!
Yet, all of these people would not blink an eyelid if they did the same thing to a coin dealer.
Guys, Life is not always what we expect of it. Somedays you get the bear, somedays the bear gets you! This man owes nobody anything. He offered the lady a price, the lady accepted. End of deal

He's right. Using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
So what if the guy who collected them for years is dead? He’s dead. He won’t know that his mom got ripped. Besides he probably never even posted here. Dead people are a great source for fresh material coming into the market.
You hit the door running – plus you made an old woman very happy.
Kudos to you on your rip! You deserve the same boasting rights as everybody else here.

although I do agree with all in regards to the woman who sold em. What goes around comes around, and Id be afraid to send those suckers in and have most come back enviormentally damaged
theres no right or wrong there, she got what was asked for them. I would have taken her aside and done the right thing i-e maybe you wanna check with someone first?..I would have gone thru and given her a fair amount so both of us make out...this is why I sleep well at nights

You are speaking for everyone saying that they would not blink an eye if they were ripping off a coin dealer. First off a little old lady as she was called and a coin dealer are two different people.
Second...no I would not be rippiing off a coin dealer either.
There are still people out there who believe there is a right and wrong.
Sure we don't have a right to judge what you do. I will however speak for myself. There is no way that I would take advantage of an elderly person like that. But that is just me...
Everyone has their own opinion on the subject...and that is fine...that is what makes the world go round
If this was an ethics class and the teacher through this scenerio out and asked people what is right and what is wrong...I wonder where the opinons would land.

I would not do that to a coin dealer. I want to do repeat business from time to time.
If a coin dealer did that (remember what Gillio was accused of with the paintings or something like that?) he could easily land up in jail.

No sir, I can't accept that. I know it's true for some, but the thousands of threads I've read on this board prove that the majority of collectors are not interested in ripping the naïve.

.Thats not what I've observed here. How many of you email an eBay dealer and tell them that their starting price is too low? How many of you email an eBay dealer after you've won an auction and offer more money because you got the coin too cheaply? How many of you send more money to the dealer whom you bought a coin off of, cracked it out, resubmitted it, and got a higher grade? I say none of you!!!!

You may disagree, Ken, but that's not the argument to use. References to ebay are meaningless - they are auctions. People put coins out there because they are willing to sell to the highest bidder. And buying a coin from a dealer that ends up getting upgraded is far from "ripping the naïve". I think it's fair to say that by definition, a dealer is not naïve.

But when you are up to 98-99% "discount" off the market value in many cases, now that is something completely different.
A dealer could land up in jail for offering 1 to 2% of market value.
<< <i>but the thousands of threads I've read on this board prove that the majority of collectors are not interested in ripping the naïve. >>
Of those thousands of threads how many said "The person didn't know what the value was so I paid them a fair price." (Other than perhaps a Michael Dixon post).
But there have been numerous threads about members contacting eBay sellers after seeing a $1000 coin listed by someone who does not know the true value and having them end the auction early. These are not dealers, but just the general public who have had some coins for sale.
How is that different than ripping the old lady, who also does not know the true value of her coins?
Both hit the door running, boast here of their rip and are cheered on by the masses.

It's not an aspect of the hobby that we should be proud of.
