Its amazing, talk to any of the big three professional grading services at shows and they will tell you how many of these they see everyday.
Its a function of people's greed. I am never amazed anymore of the level of greed on both sides. These are not even good quality counterfeits. Can you imagine the look on the submitters face when he/she brings it to a dealer or gets it back from a grading service as counterfeit. By then it will be too late. The seller will be long gone.

At first I thought this coin was a fake all the way. Then I put it into Photo Shop and could not tell from the terrible pictures if it was fake or real. One thing for sure is that the coin is not a 63 with the damage on the obverse. Too bad for the bidders on the coin.

An MS63 certified one just went yesterday for over $10.000. I wish that everyone understood the raw/certified thing. I don't know if the coin is real or not, but if it was certifed if would bring a ton of money.

I was thinking the same thing. In some of the photos it looks like a little bump in the mintmark area. In others, I see nothing. What a joke.

On one hand, I feel sorry for the bidders. On the other, how retarded would you have to be bid big$$$ for a raw coin like this when you can't even see the mintmark? The high bidder has a high feedback rating...it's not like he's a newbie. Most of the other bids are from some guy with zero feedback, so that's a little strange. I guess I just don't get it.

A mint mark is present on the coin and it looks like a D but outside of that I could not tell if it is even in the correct position or the correct D.

Still....

for the people bidding and their lack of knowledge. Maybe they have requested better pictures from the seller.

RULE NUMBER ONE when purchasing this particular key but really any key coin....BUY IT SLABBED FROM ONE OF THE BIG 3!!!!! Anyone dumb enough to purchase a key raw , especially one that has a history (a long one) of counterfiets should be responsible for their own actions! And this comes from a guy who for the most part thinks slabbing is hurting the hobby LONG RUN

I would never ever buy a raw key-date coin such as this one. this coin looks questionable at best. The buyer better have a beach towel handy, cause there is gonna be alot of cryin' going on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am the point now when I think people like getting ripped off. You'll have an honest seller who will do their best to be truthful about the item they are selling and get nothing or very little for it. Then you'll have some con artist just say the words "MS-something" with crap for images and people will kill themselves to bid on a piece of crap. I am still amazed at the number of people who will bid on a coin without seeing it. Maybe they like to buy junk! Maybe they like being taken. Humans! Claim to be so advanced yet so ignorant

You can also tell it is fake by the D mint mark. On a unc coin it should be tall and clear. Here I just see a lump. There are 4 reverse dies used to make the 1916-D. The shape, size, and location are all known. If the D does not match up to the real reverse dies then it is a fake. Most are made by placing a D onto a 1916-P. There are also some die struck fakes but they also have die characteristics that give them away.
