Dragon is correct about the modest premium attached to a Morgan dollar with 2 sided toning compared to one having only the obverse toned. That premium may be in the range of 10-20%. But, if that's the case, how high should the premium be for a coin toned only the reverse? My sense is that the proper premium, to the extent that one can generalize, is much lower than is reflected in the prices I've seen such pieces offered for lately. In my judgment, a gorgeous reverse toned common date MS65 dollar is worth about $200 wholesale. That's about what I can sell them for at a show. If the reverse is a monster rainbow, then perhaps the coin could conceivably bring $300-500, but not likely to a dealer. Of course, the premium for such a coin packaged with the toned reverse in front of the slab should be no more than cost of getting the coin reholdered.

I believe your generalization about a reverse toner wholeselling for no more than $200 is a little low and $300-$500 for a Monster reverse and most likely to a non dealer is also a low. We all know it depends on the coin and what it looks like.

I sold quite a few reverse toners at FUN for anywhere between $400 and $900 (about half were to dealers at those prices). Even sold a reverse toner raw for $750.

can you post pics of the coins you are referring to as being $200 reverse toners?

    thanks

JB: Sorry, but I don't have any of those $200 reverse toners left to show you. In fact, I only have one reverse toned Morgan left in my collection -- it was by far the best of these, so I simply decided to keep it. If you'd like to see a scan of that coin, and perhaps provide your judgment on its value, just send me your e-mail address. You can also post it here as well once I send it to you.

That's a very attractive reverse toned piece gemtone. If you ever decide to sell it, please let me know as I need a nice reverse toned one for my collection.
