    mgoodm3,

Not AU. I grade it at about MS63.

Edit: I like Brian's grade guess better, though. image

You guys grade way too low. It could easily get a MS66. The majority of unc 1938-D buffs grade MS65 or better. It is hard to find a bad one. A huge number of them were saved in unc rolls.

    Merc,

It's got a ding in his brow and a couple dings in his lower jaw that I think would keep it from grading gem.

I'd have to agree with "Merc". I have one almost identical in a NGC MS66 holder. The dings might keep it in MS65 range but definitly a very good shot at MS65.

    Nice colors there!

Nice one Russ! I really like that way that nickel tones sometimes. The neat thing about nickel is that it doesn't seem to tone in wild colors as often as silver, but when it does the colors are often really vivid.

You know Russ, based on your prior experience with this guy, I would have his home number, his cell number, and occasionally take him out to lunch, and really , really take good care of him at Christmas.image

My relationship with this guy is really kind of funny. Whenever he gets something he thinks I'll like, he gives me a call on Saturday, and I head up there on Sunday morning. He doesn't always have something worth buying, (he's an optimistic type, and kind of a rookie at coins), but when he does it always goes something like this:

He pulls whatever he has for me from his case, I give it some scrutiny and make a really stupid lowball offer.

Him: But, damn Russ, that's way less than it cost me. I paid $xx for the coin (lying through his teeth).
Me: Terry, the coin is a POS with this wrong, that wrong etc. (lying throuh my teeth).
    Him: But, it cost me...
Me (Cutting him off): It's not my damned fault you buy stupid.
Him: Okay, I suppose I could take $xx for it (throws out a number between my lowball and what he says he paid for it).
Me: Nah, can't do it. The coin isn't worth that much.
Him (As he's putting the coin back in the case): Man, you're killing me, Russ!

Then we chit-chat for a while. I teach him about different stuff, (today it was detecting hairlines on proofs), and he teaches me about currency - which is really his thing. Or, sometimes antique marbles, which is another thing he likes.

    Then, after a while:

Me: Well, let me take another look at the coin/s.
Him: Pulls it out, hands it to me and says something along the lines of "really like that, don't you."
Me: It's okay, but not at the stupid money you want.
Him: What's the most you'll give me?
Me: Well, all I have is $xx, and you'd be emptying my wallet (lying though my teeth).
Him: All right, but I'm losing $xx on the coin! Damn! (lying through his teeth).

Just repeat the above every time I visit him. image

    Russ:

Did you take a good look at the D? I am not able to tell from the picture, but there is a D/S and and D/D. As for the grade, it is either 63 or 64...mostlikely 64 because of the eye appeal.

    Coinkat,

I did, indeed, scrutinize the D closely. Not a D/D or D/S. I've handled both, so it's one of the very few things I know about Buffs. image

I took these last night, all PCGS. The 38-D is a 66, but I struggled getting a good shot of this one. The slab is pretty scuffed up, especially around the buffalo's chin.

    a '36 ms66 for comparison

    and a ms63

Hope these aren't too big image
