David Lawrence to auction Richmond Collection-25Mil!!
WOW!!!
I've always been told that strong prices bring amazing coins out of the woodwork. I guess that old saying is true. Over the last couple years we as collectors have had the chance to see some fabulous coins and record prices.
For example, who would have thought the 5th 1913 nickel would have been found?
This is a great time to be into coins. Most of these rarities are way out of reach for most collectors, but if you haven't had a chance to attend a major show or auction, now is the time to do so. Go to lot viewing and take the opportunity to hold a 94-S Dime, a 70-S Dollar, an 1804 Dollar, the finest known Chain Cent, etc, etc...You don't have to be able to afford these coins to enjoy them. If you've never seen a Mint State Chain Cent and been able to check out the Hair and Other detail, especially the Metal Flow and see what it actually is supposed to look like, go to a major auction.
In an earlier thread there was discussion about astute collectors BUYING all the good coins.
Maybe, just maybe it's the astute collectors who are SELLING their coins?

What good is it when prices are low if the coins you want aren't available? Personally, I'd rather have them available and have to decide how much I can afford!
I would be interested to see who is at that auction. That collection is well known.I think it will bring out all the big money collectors.

I agree with you that high prices are good, only because it gives collectors the opportunity to aquire truely rare COINS that are not available in a down market. When I say COINS I mean the ultra rare coins, 85 Trade Dollars, 1913 Nickels, 1804 Dollars, 70-S Dollars, 73-CC N/A Quarters, 94-S Dimes, etc. or a finest know 94 Dollar, Chain, 96 & 97 Half. Sorry for not mentioning any gold issues.
A great coin market will show people which coins are truely rare and which ones aren't.
When I see 56 FE's, 1916 Quarters, 01-S Quarters in AG-G, 89-CC & 93-S Morgans double, triple or quadruple in price, that's when astute collectors should be selling. These coins are not rare. IMHO
<< <i>Not a single IHC mentioned in the highlights >>
There's a Two Cent Piece, though.

In addition, though I have bought coins from David Lawrence and like them, nonetheless does it seem to anyone else a bit risky for someone to offer a $25 million dollar collection to a company for its first auctions? Or, perhaps the collector feels that his or her collection will, by itself, attract collectors... Regardless, I fully expect that David Lawrence will do a GREAT job selling the coins.

<< <i>anyone know if most of those pieces are NGC plastic or PCGS? I noticed only ONE coin and in NGC in the DLRC ad/notice piece and when I saw that I thought if that is the case lots of money will NOT HAPPEN if most are in NGC slabs. JMHO whatever!
Marc >>
If it is coins commonly collected by plastic collectors, then the prices will not happen. If it is coins that are collected for the coins, big money will happen no matter whose holder they are in.
And yes, for most of the better dates it won't matter who's holder they are in. These are known coins with a history.
funny how they change their opinion when there's an opportunity to make $$$ (ie THEY are the 1's receiving the buyers & seller's premiums)

But, they have been telling everyone at shows for a long time now that they would be doing an auction.
"A common fallacy of the auction business is that you will receive more money for your coins than outright sale."
"...coins take time and proper marketing to fing their ideal "home""
"...most often coins are sold at auction to other coin dealers. Guess who wins- the auction company! They make 15% on the sellers commission, and as much as 10% more from the buyer!" (my italics)
now all of a sudden, the kindly folks over at d-l have decided that THEY are going to BE "the auction company"? why? they imply you will get LESS $ than from outright sale! i just want to know why the sudden change of heart by david-lawrence. is it because they have the best interests of those silly little coin collectors at heart? or could it be greed?
naaah, couldn't be greed. after all, they're david-lawrence! they got their little star system! where AAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL of their coins warrant 4 of 5 stars OR BETTER!
little story for you. buddy of mine sold a rare coin to d-l in a pcgs slab. they quoted a fair price over the phone, so he agreed & off it went. few days later, he gets a call - the coin's not so nice in person. in fact, it's downright overgraded & ugly for the slabed grade! (which was true). hmm. buddy agrees to take a few hundred off, & they complete the transaction. guess what, that coin, the very same ugly, overgraded 1 that they said was a piece of crap, appeared on their website & c-w ad w/ a huge markup - AS A FOUR-STAR COIN.
funny how that happens.
