do you use a golden dollar in everyday use?

I just went to the bank and tried to get a roll of golden dollars and the tell had to go to a few tellars and collect their spare dollars in order to get 20. Is this normal? How much do you use the golden dollar?

I have used them only one time, when they first came out, at a Walgreens when I was picking up an Rx.

The pharm tech looked at them funny, and asked if they were goldimage

For some reason, I remember this occasion very clearly.
  • I've never received one in change.

However, I have spent a few on occasion.

I use them all the time for vending machines and bridge tolls. But I don't get mine from the bank -- I have a contact at the FRB in San Francisco who gets them for me. Fresh, BU rolls for me to break apart and jam in vending machines for a Coke. Mmmmm.....

Every once in a while. And each time the person receiving them glowers at me and some have said they wish they couldn't accept them.

Once in a while. I have a couple of rolls from a few years ago, and I grab a few from time to time. I usually don't carry any change. I have gotten them in change at the train station, from the parking fee machine ($3 fee. Insert a $5 bill and get 2 Sacs as change), never in a store.

I have tried to get them at the bank before, and I was told the did'nt carry them in stock anymore. The only time they have any is when someone comes in a deposits them. However, I have used them to leave tips and waiters always seem to enjoy them.

I wish my train station parking machine took dollar coins! The fee is $2 -- I tried two Sackies; it rejected them. I think inserted a $5 -- and got twelve quarters change. Sounded like I had won the slots -- but I wouldn't describe lugging twelve quarters around in my pocket as a "win" image .
  • Well, if the bank fails, you can always go put a bunch of cash in the Stamp machines and buy one cheap little stamp (or a book if you actually need the stamps) and then hit the change return button and you will get dollar coins in change...of course, there is a chance of them being SBAs and/or Sacs.

I did this for kicks one time. I owed someone some money, so I went to the stamp machine in Walmart and got myself $100 worth of Sacs out of it and then paid them in $1 coins! image

nwcs: techically, no one has to accept any and all forms of legal tender payment.

From the U.S. Dept. of the Treasury web site:

<< <i>Question - I thought that United States currency was legal tender for all debts. Some businesses or governmental agencies say that they will only accept checks, money orders or credit cards as payment, and others will only accept currency notes in denominations of $20 or smaller. Isn't this illegal?

Answer - The pertinent portion of law that applies to your question is the Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 102. This is now found in section 392 of Title 31 of the United States Code. The law says that: "All coins and currencies of the United States, regardless of when coined or issued, shall be legal-tender for all debts, public and private, public charges, taxes, duties and dues."

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy. >>

I use them all the time. I get them as change from the vending machine I buy stamps from at the post office.

  • I always have a couple of rolls of them in the console of my car. Great for paying parking fees and at drive thrus. A whole lot easier than taking off my seat belt to get to my wallet.

My bank always seems to have them. Not BU ones exactly and often with old SACs mixed in, but I can always get rolls.

Every time I use a stamp machine at the post office (often they aren't workingimage) I get them in change if the change is $1.00 or greater. Since I use the stamp machines a lot becuase the lines are usually very long, I see golden and SBA dollars fairly often - it's fun trying to spend then - usually good for a few strange looks or checks with managers to make sure they are OK.

My bank tries to give 'em away.

Lots of SBA's and circulated, gunky brown SAC's.

Where, exactly, is this bank that gives away money? I've never seen one...
  • I have never recieved one in change. I bought a roll of them just to see what they were all about. I cashed them all in with a bag of halves except one. I spent it and got a funny look. I don't think very many people are aware of it's existence, same with the SBA and the halves. I've spent a few SBA's and people thought they were quarters. If the mint is going to produce these the only way they're going to get used is if they ban the $1 bill.
  • I spend them when I can get them, which isn't often as my bank doesn't carry them. Can't get them at the Post office either and the machine here only sells one product, a book of 15 37 cent stamps and requires exact change. You can put in more money, but the machine doesn't make change so you lose the excess.

I've been using Ikes as well lately. I have to pay a premium to get them but it is fun. (I never carry more than a couple though, too heavy.

I get them in change quite often and spend them right away to keep them in circulation. image
  • The Buffalo, NY Subway ticket vending machines gives them out and will accept them. That really came in handy this summer, let me tell you. It makes it quite handy to not have to take out the wallet to remove a dollar but to have the mass transit fare all in coins. I use the dollar coins on mass transit and vending machines mostly. I don't need the bad attitude from the clerks at the store. Tips are fair game.

I look forward to the day they become mainstream.

If I get them, they either go in the church collection or as a tip to a friendly bar maid.
  • They come out of stamp machines, coke machines, vending machines and even slot machines. image

  • The only times I've ever received any in change has been from Post Office vending machines. I'll use them when I get them but never get any from cashiers. My wife has told me it is rare when her store gets any.

I have spent hundreds of them, but have only received one or two as change.

  • i say we all get a roll of them at the bank tommorow and with the stregnth of 500 forum members x 20 coins per roll the federal reserve is bound to see a slight need for more
  • I have put over 500 of them in circulation and never received one back. For some strange reason people put them up in jars and piggy banks instead of spending them. I give up. It may be good for the government to mint coins instead of printing bills but people just wont use them. I say make a $5.00 coin.
  • A $5 coin would meet the same fate as the $1 coin as long as there is a paper alternative.

People are just too used to using paper. So, if the government wants to make the coins work, they have to quit making the paper equivalents. Then people wouldn't have a choice.

I ask for them in change. "Do you have any one dollar coins?" Invariably, the clerk will start counting out quarters, so I say, "No, one dollar coins." It takes some effort to get them to grasp the concept, even if they have a few in the cash register. I like them. I like coins.

I bought a $1000 box when they first came out. Great for giving out as tips or any small purchase.

Never got one back in change though. Sucks that you can only get the nice fresh rolls from the mint.

My bank was always less than helpful in supplying them.

  • Some of the bigger banks in Greensboro actually have mint wrapped rolls, where I've received some (sadly no 2001-P's).

I do my part and get at least a roll every month and put them into circulation as tips and small spending (so I don't often see the reaction). When used as payment (gas, Chick-Fil-A, etc), I get mixed responses. Let's just say the more youth-challenged set finds them useless (a certain clerk used that specific word, although it's all money), where the younger folks barely bat an eye.

But everyone is right here - we'll never get these circulating until the $1 bill is gone, like is in all of Europe, the UK, Canada, etc.....

  • NEVER!!!! DEATH TO THE "GOLDEN DOLLAR"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Like many others I get mine from the post office stamp machine and spend them. I spent about $100 worth last year and haven't had any problems.

My best response wasn't using the dollar coins; it was when I tried to spend halves at the mall, I was asked if they were the new quarters!! image

I spend Sacs and SBAs all the time. My bank never seems to have a full roll of them, so I get 5 or 10 each time I deposit a paycheck. If the teller is naive enough to ask "and how would you like that back, sir?: I usually reply "Golden Doubloons or Spanish Pieces of Eight will suffice, thank you." When we get down to reality, the teller checks the days inventory of one dollar coins and half dollars (the latter of which are rarely available). If I'm lucky the teller will ask if I want gold or silver, to which I reply the big old silver ones. Once in the last 2 years I got a few Ikes. The teller usually assumes I don't want the SBAs, but I have an especially cruel way of spending these: a tip in a restaurant when the service was "slightly less than wonderful", to use Fats Waller's phrase. Only once, on my way out the door, have I had to face an irate waitress who thought that I gave her two quarters. I have never had a $1 US coin of any color refused.

I've never received a golden dollar in change, and haven't received an SBA in change for almost two years. The post offices I visit rarely seem to have working stamp machines.

Spending $1 coins is always fun, especially with homeless people, who expect a quarter, and usually offer to keep you in their prayers once they see "United States of America" and "One Dollar" stamped on what is most likely their first one dollar coin. Several have asked for my name, saying they will keep me in their prayers.

Whenever I have a circulated clad Ike or Kennedy to spend in a normal transaction (and often when I spend the newer $1 coins) I have to tell the recipient to spend it lest its value erode to inflation in their dresser drawer at home.

Spending $1 coins is almost as much fun as giving the young cashier at a fast food joint a couple of dateless buffalo nickels along with rag dollars when the bill is $4.10.

  • The mintage numbers of these coins is rather interesting:

    2000P - 767,140,000
    2000D - 518,916,000
    2001P - 62,468,000
    2001D - 70,939,500
    2002P - 3,865,610
    2002D - 3,732,000

    less and less
I dunno about 2003 mintages, my guess is 1million maybe even less
are they going to make them this year?

  • that is some crazyness, that would mean why i find mostly all of my sacs to be 2000's maybe an initial large mintage to go with their huge marketing campaign? Surely by now the mintage levels have leveled off?
