1936 Proof Set

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,160 ✭✭✭✭✭
I saw a commercial late last night from the U.S. Mint. They are advertising a new 1936 Proof Set that they are making. It has the wheatie, jefferson, merc, washington and walker half. The coins look like any super nice 21st century proof. However they don't look like the die making was very good and the details on the coins are definitely less than an actual circulation coin. Still it's kinda neat...what do y'all think about this?

P.S. They say the silver coins are made of 100mil silver and the cent is 100mil copper. Does that mean they are silver and copper plated?

first, not the US mint, some private outfit. Second, they are base metal novelty medals only plated with a thin layer of silver. Finally, they are worth nowhere near what they are selling them for. If you want one as a curiosity or conversation piece, find it on ebay in a few weeks or months, greatly discounted.

No I'm not interested in a reproduction proof set. I wouldn't buy any reproduction coin. I want the real thing.

    Don't touch it!

  • Sounds like a sleezy outfit if they made you believe it was from the US Mint and was real.

I watched some coin sales show on TV for a few minutes. They were selling 40 years of proof sets for a lot of dough. They mentioned the '63 Proof 70 Lincoln bringing in $30,000 as if to suggest you might be so lucky as to find a potential proof 70 in their proof sets. Yeah, right.
  • I'm not sure who minted them, but I have seen a set "in hand".They're nice looking coins, but are stamped
w/the dreaded "COPY" on the back.

100 mil is fairly thick if you consider cassette tape is about 1 mil thick.
    Still numismaticly worthless.
Good eye candy for the not-so-serious coin collector.

JB had a couple of neat repros at his table at the Money Show.
They made me look twice I tell ya.
One Flowing Hair design and an early Half Eagle Capped Bust to Left design gold coin.

    Neat to look at.

Reproduction proof set made by the National Collectors Mint and sold for $29.95 plus shipping. A neat idea but has no real "collectable value".

Actually, the coins you can buy on TV are probably better than... oh, never mind.

  • Looks like they used a 1998 (or earlier) proof Washington quarter as a model and the engraver simply copied the S mintmark and revised the date. Washington's portrait actually looks pretty good but it is not accurate for a 1936 issue and matches modern (pre 1999) issues. I assume the engraver did the same on the Lincoln cent.

yah, the buff and the merc actually look halfway decent, the half is a joke, and the penny and quarter, who cares, they look just like your pocket change only cameo.

    Hey, I have a reproduction!

and I think it looks better than any of those, for the same thirty bucks. It is 90% silver.
