It sure depends what you consider good

I find some stuff I really like there still - maye you have become such a picky shopper that nothing meets your expectations

I have noticed myself that frequently I hit an auction and see the seller and back out before reading anymore

I also no longer buy stuff that a year ago I would have boughten - harshly cleaned or severely overgraded.

I think that after awhile you just get better at grading from photos.image

i'm pretty much off ebay these days. there probably are some coins i could use, but it just ain't worth the time & hassle of wading through piles of camel dung to find an occasional "maybe" coin.

I've been feeling the same way. The amount of decent material seems to dwindle by the day, not that there was a lot to begin with. Just go to the Franklin Halves category for example. On the first page, I see nearly all certified coins. Four are graded by PCGS, none by NGC, the great majority of the rest are PCI, NTC or SGS and a few raw ones thrown in the mix. Way too much junk to wade through these days.

I've notice a lot of low grade Lincolns getting bought. I've sold some of my seconds for more than I would pay and the folks were quite happy getting them. I think because it's getting hard to find decent looking coins (of this series) on Ebay. There is a lot of junk out there.

Ebay has become something of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Buyers low ball their bids hoping for rips or because of overgrading and decent sellers can get more for the quality pieces at shows.
That leaves Ebay wide open for the scammers and the drek & swill .

Well, I will risk being called a spammer....

I think I have a few interesting coins on eBay this week. A circulated $3 gold, a proof Mercury dime, two cameo proof Frankies, a classic commem and a few others. I'm getting an early proof set ready for next week. I'm sure other folks have some neat coins too.

Perhaps we are getting used to looking at coins like those from the recent Heritage "Platinum Night" auctions?

There is always something worthwhile if you have a broad enough collecting interest.

Unfortunately you also have to wade through an awful lot of garbage to find the "good" stuff.

I don't think a week has gone by that I didn't buy something off of eBay and I don't sell no junk. (Of course one man's junk is ...)

I won't buy a coin thru an ebay auction unless the coin is certified thru pcgs or ngc and it would have to show in the scan that it was truely outstanding for the grade. The few coins that I have seen that met this critiria usually get on either side of 30 bids and I lose to someone willing to pay more then the coin is worth to win. Actually right now for coins that show outstanding eye appeal even in a digital picture or scan Ebay might not be such a bad place to auction your "eye appeal coins".

The trouble with buying nice stuff at ebay is it's to much "work" in terms of how much time it takes to sift thru the garbage to find something really nice.

I'll be putting some very nice material from my collection up very soon. The problem with the coin catagory on eBay is that most of the items offered are now coming from dealers or pseudo-dealers. This is the stuff they can't get rid of on the bourse floor or in shops.

I still occasionally buy off eBay, but my Darkside collecting has become so specialized that there are only a handful of dealers in the world that have the stuff I want.

    We ARE watching you.

There have been some really nice PCGS graded Ikes hitting Ebay. PR68's and 69's I've been looking at many to add to the registry set I'm working instead of going threw the pain of finding one to sent off to be graded. However, that's just my opinion of Ebay as of late. I've been looking at one auction where it is a BIN and for 66 bucks one can get two graded Ikes in PCGS slabs a 78 PR68 and a 76 silver PR67. Most likely I'd sell the PR 67 the 76 silver I have I know will grade higher than a 67. You think any ebayers would buy the 67?? Okay, I'll shut up now...LOL!image

    Hey Lawman,

Yup some of those Ikes are priced below the PCGS listings. Take for instance a 1973-S Silver PR69DCAM the price guide at PCGS lists it for $150 bucks, I've been seeing them going on ebay for about $65 bucks. A 73 clad at PRDCAM69 is about the same $150 but have been going at the bay for about $50. A PR69 DCAM 76 silver is about $140 but have been going for $75 BIN at ebay. There are some that are over priced some of the 77 and 78's PR69DCAMs have been listed a little high. And of course, anything that is SGS,PCI and some other slabs are over priced. I saw one SGS slabbed Ike where the seller had a BIN price of $999.00! But of course I am going by the PCGS daily price guide and that is what some of these cats are setting there prices on. I think that a lot of the sellers know that people are willing to pay for the slab name and not the coin. But that's capitalism...supply and demand...LOL!!image

    Here's a thought-

For my collecting needs, I've been moving away from Ebay. To complete my set in the paper currency world, I need a bunch of rare signature combinations, which are our equivalent of key dates to the coin world. I rarely find the rarer key signature combos on Ebay anymore, and the rare sellers that do offer them up have reserves that never get met.

I think a lot of it the lack of good material, from my perspective is that Ebayers aren't willing to meet market prices. Would you want to sell items at a loss, or would you put your good material in a forum where it will actually realize an acceptable selling price? There's a lot less camel dung for me to wade through in the currency auctions, but still I'm seeing the same old stuff on there, with only a few notes still catching my interest. Interestingly enough, my buying patterns as of late have shifted away from Ebay.... coincidence?
    Tim
