A collector friend of mine is working on a set of Mint State coins
from his birth year. He's having a hard time finding them all ; 1935.
I think it's a cool idea and thinking of doing it myself ; 1953.
Anyone else done it, doing it, or thinking about doing it ?
How do you go about it ?

My grandfather ( 1889 - 1959 ), my grandmother ( 1898 - 1971 ), my father ( 1917 - ), my mother
( 1921 - ) all have sets now.
The 1889 and 1898 Year sets consist of Proof and Mint State Coins (averaging PR/ MS 64 ) and are complete:1889: IHC MS 65RB, IHC PR 65BN, 3 Cent PR 66CAM, 3 Cent MS 66, Nickel PR 65, Nickel MS 65, Dime PR 64, Dime MS 62, Quarter PR 66 CAM, Quarter MS 64, Half PR 64, Half MS 64, Dollar PR 63, Dollar MS 65. The 1898 set is comparable. The gold year sets are in AU 58, and am missing just the Dollar Gold and the Eagle for 1889.
The 1917 set is a complete mint mark set including both types of Standing Liberty Quarters and Walking Liberty Halves MM OBV & MM REV. I plan on adding a McKinley Gold Dollar from 1917 to round out that set. The 1917 set is an average MS 64.
The 1921 set is a real buster. Its complete, but the half dollars are all AU 55 to AU 58, the rest average MS 64. I also have all the 1921 Comemmorative Half Dollars including both Alabamas, both Missouris, and the Pilgrim.
I have not worked that hard on getting my year set completed, just have the cents, nickels and quarters in MS 66, ( no dimes yet ) and only one of the halves. Oh yeah, its 1947.
My kids sets are complete in Mint Set format, nothing certified.
I have made it a practice to give either proof sets or mint sets out for weddings, birthdays, holidays and anniversaries. Everyone enjoys them and continually remark that these gifts were the most memorable ones.

venture. I'm not sure I can afford to complete a set for all of my family.
Think I'll go for a mint set for them and ms-65 or better PCGS slabs for myself.
Selfish, I suppose, but I'm the only coin collector in the family !
A birth year set is a great start to a type set. It helps to have smaller goals on the way to a bigger goal. I'm working on a complete US type set but that will take a long time to finish!
It's all about the # on the slab. Very high priced plastic to say the least.
And I collect Barbers, IHC, & V-nicks by type, the type being the ones minted in 1897. I'm very picky about those & actually bought the coin itself and grade or holder brand doesn't matter much to me with those.
