Unsolicited ebay offer...help me craft a response

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,790 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hey guys,

I got one of those unsolicited emails after I bid on something from DHRC (the email wasn't from DHRC but likely from some scammer).

Here is the email I received.....tell me what kind of reply/actions (if any) I should send/do.
(I can't wait to hear Russ' ideas...heheh)
(only thing edited has been my email)

Wouldn't go near that guy -- you would be asking for problems.

Tell him simply that you reported him to the Rules & Safety department of e-bay and that unsolicited
    e-mails are not welcome.

I received the same email concerning two coins I had bid on.

I replied, in jest, by asking him to send the coins to me. I then received another email, in which he displayed better English and was more sophisticated. He included detailed (canned, no doubt) information on how I could get the funds to him through Western Union, etc. Guaranteed scam!

I don't seem to be blessed with getting these wonderful offers. image

I only snipe when I bid on eBay. For those who get these offers is it possible you get them because you put your bids in early and the scammers get to see who is bidding on what?

You could send back a response along the lines of:

"Please go take English 101 and Keyboarding 101. When you have learned to type properly and know a little bit more about correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc., then I *might* listen to you. Of course, in the mean time, you may want to brush up on Ethics 101 as you are in breach of Ebay's policy on use of my personal contact infomation in sending me an unsolicited e-mail. You have been reported to Ebay's Rules and Safety. Thank you for playing."

How bout we all email him saying we're interested in the coin?

tell him you only deal with eBay auctions because you check the feedback of seller and what else they are selling because you frequently buy multiple auctions from same seller. If you are truly a 'great seller' this should be no problem - just list your coin starting at $XX with a Buy - It Now of $XX +1 and email you back so you can go buy it - if it is a great coin and you are a great seller.

    Dear catelusu_mic@yahoo.com,

I am SO glad you contacted me! I was bidding in that auction because I just received a very large inheritance and I need to get this money invested. The stock market has been very bad, so I decided rare coins might be a good idea. The problem is that I know very little about them!

You seem very knowledgeable in this area and may be just the right person to help me invest these funds. Do you have a large supply of good coins for investments? Your assistance would be very appreciated.

I have a little over $700,000 USD that I need to invest. Can you help?

    Thank you!

unfortunately I still use AOhelL, and what I do in a case like this is click once - REPORT SPAM. I don't waste my time even dealing with folks like that. Reporting to eBay is a good thing too. image

However if you want to write him back, I agree with other posts above - tell him to send you a FEW coins for inspection and you will pay later.

I got another scam email from a yahoo.uk address again concerning an '01s quarter.

I let loose a flurry of cursewords like you've never seen or heard and then told the clown to email me a photo with him and today's newspaper with the coin on top of it.

    no reply

Send him a copy of that scam email going aroun. It's from South Africa...some guy trying to claim his multi-million dollar inheritance, but he needs YOUR help.
Another variant is that you are a gazillion dollar lottery winner, because your email address was selected from thousands on the internet. Now you just have to send money to claim your lottery prize.

    Good replies.

Earlier today, I did report him to ebay (or last night, I forget which....doesn't matter....scammers just need to dry up and get shot or something).
I am not as prolific at needling people as Russ nor as poison penned as wingedliberty has shown to be, but I did type up a little bit that I am pasting below.
I doubt I will get a response, but if I do, I will post it.

"What's your ebay user ID? How do I know you are a great seller?
What's the certification number of the coin you have to sell?
Send it to me on approval and if I like it for the agreed upon price (you
know how much I am willing to pay) then I will send you the money.
What's your full name anyway? You only listed an anonymous email address.
Send me your contact info....all great sellers would."

"How bout we all email him saying we're interested in the coin?" I like that idea, but maybe I'm still recovering from the sticker shock of today's auction.

Hey, the fool sent me scam-spam (unsolicited offer to buy using my ebay info) so I am all for people using his email alias to say you are interested in the coin.

I like the idea of everyone emaling him...hahaha....

but it's a better idea I think to write back simply stating that he's been reported to ebay.

    Hi there!
    yes ...I`m agreat seller..
the price is 2000$.. including shipping taxes..
Here is my propose for our deal:
    SHIPPMENT :
There are 2 options of delivery services that are very fast :
    - UPS 2 days air insured
    - FedEx 2 days air insured
Any of those services are good, but I personaly prefere UPS 2 days air, if you have other preference, there is no problem.
    2. PAYMENT :
For payment, the fastest ways to send money worldwide are Western Union wire transfer. To arrange the transfer, you must go in
person to an Western Union (you cannot send money online to this country, but please visit www.westernunion.com or to find the nearest
agent and hours of operation). From Western Union , you will receive a number (MTCN Money Transfer Control Number), you must send me that
number as soon as you have arranged the payment so I
can go to www.westernunion.com to see if the transaction is arranged. As soon as I have verifyed the transaction, I will
ship you the package with all the accesories with the delivery service selected by you. For the reason that you will pay some money for the
Western Union wire transfer fee, I will cover shipping and insurance.
    3. INSURANCE
The package will be insured at the delivery service for the amount of the value of the package. If somethig happens on the road , you will receive the insurance from the delivery service.
    4. RETURN POLICY
As soon as the package arrives, you will test the products and if it does not matches 100% to your expectations, you will return it in max. 5 days sience the arrival date. In this case I will send you
the full amount back and you will send me the products in the original box and you will pay the return
shipping and insurance The shipping will be ! with UPS 2 days air or FedEx 2 days air and I will pay shipping and insurance charges.
I'm waitting for your shortly answer if you're interested to buy!
If you are agree contact me for close the deal
    My best regards!

Heh, classic scam. do not EVEN CONSIDER sending money this way, or enter into such a transaction. (I know you wouldn't, just saying it to be safe)

play with him all you want, ask for a picture of the coin, ask if he'll use Escrow, ask for the cert number on the coin, ask him where he learned his extraordinary command of the English language, etc etc.

but do not send this clown one penny

I'm not sending this clown any money, don't worry about that.
heck, I think that DHRC should be emailing this fool since it was a DHRC auction that I bid on that he is wanting to sell the same thing to me.
