PCGS Price Guide

What exactly are these prices? It seems to me they are some what inflated suggested retail prices. I know gold is hot but common date PCGS MS64 saints and libs are not going for $970.00, not yet anyway. So I wonder what they base this price list on. Also ,if the coin market is so HOT then why are most silver coin prices flat, most prices have hardly moved in the last several years.

    The PCGS price guide has always been high.
    PCGS Currency: HOF 2013, Best Low Ball Set 2009-2014, 2016, 2018. Appreciation Award 2015, Best Showcase 2018, Numerous others.

    If you click the link at the top for DHRC and look at the prices they are selling coins for they pretty much match the pcgs price guide.

    Example 1927 $20 MS64 $990.00

    Another possibility, the PCGS Price Guide may reflect the prices PCGS graded coins
    are selling for.
    I just bought my second NGC coin because it was about 10% less than the same
    PCGS grade. I hated to do it but my budget leave me a choice.
    I realize PCGS is the premier service but not all collectors have the disposable
    income that allows paying more for a particular slab.

    skipper welcome to the hobby, but I have to tell you that the price guide for most the coins does not reflect the market. They are usually within a few dollars what DHRC has their coins listed for sale on their website. Don't believe me check it out. As far as having to buy an NGC coin you will find that most serious, informed collectors if they collect graded coins will have them in their inventory. Buy the coin not the slab and in the long run you will be happier. As far as who is the premier service that debate will rage on image as long as thinking folks post to this forum.

    Common date ms64 double eagle Saints are selling for 700 to 750 in a pcgs 64 holder at auctions like Heritage. Which is not 970 but is a whole lot more than they were selling for last year! that price guide is exactly as mentioned before, just a guide which a few retail dealers use as their list price. One can buy coins on EBAY or at Heritage or just about any auction venue quite a bit cheaper.

    These are prices that a retail brick and mortar shop would love to get when selling properly graded coins.
