The coolest untoned Merc ever - you won't be disappointed

That thread with the prooflike pics reminded me that the upcoming Heritage sale as a bunch of prooflike coins sprinkled through the various denominations. An astute collector hunted these down for over 25 years.

This Merc is just mindblowing. Pretty much defines prooflike and NGC thought so and gave it that designation.

  • looks like there are quite a few PL Mercs for sale in this auction. might have to pick one of those up unless Tim gets them all.

I would need to see that coin in person. It's VERY easy to make a coin look PF in a photo.

    No offense intended.

Amazing coin. I would not be surprised to see it realize $9000

  • It probably just came back from NCS. Watch out for NGC "PL's" in a new holder. One one hand they did just start giving the PL designation to more series than Commems and Morgans but come on, how many ORIGINAL PL Mercury Dimes has anyone here seen or heard of? I know a PL Boone I recently inquired about just got the NCS bath and the seller admitted that it wasn't PL when he sent it in. Remember, you heard it here first.

    Tonelover, EXCELLENT POINT!

I'm 50-50 on an NCS bath. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

    Caveat Emptor.

  • Yeah, then they have the nerve to trump themselves up with supercalifragalisticexpialodocious monster Registry Set grades. So you now have a conserved coin which is double trouble thanks to gradeflation, all in all a very bad recipie. There's a lot of it going around these days. Or do I just have too negative an outlook? Maybe some of the seasoned pros such as Coinguy or MrEureka can tell us how many original Prooflike Mercury Dimes in MS-68 they've seen in their time.
  • I don't think it will sell for 9k, if so maybe I should buy the other one , and send it to ncs
and get the pl designation from ngc and sell it, the pics of the 2 don't look very different
    to me.

except the 2nd one has a few more marks on the holder

the coin is really nice but its just that NGC`s grading make me sick.

its all about market grading with them.
good for them and those that sell, bad for everyone else that `buys the plastic` and discounts the coin itself.

bump in case others haven't seen it.

Yeah, the new slabbing makes me a little nervous too. Several of the others are in older NGC slabs and were either sent in after the star designation or resubmitted to get it.

ditto cam40, and frankly I don't care for any of those including the dumb star.
Hello!, do I really need some service telling me the coin is extra special?. image I also believe the coin will NOT sell (you heard it here first image) in NGC plastic if it says 68 it is maximum 67 at best (at least as far as Merc's are concerned) and together with the bath theorys....... image

Heritage takes the cake for the worst coin photography in history.
