Local Coin Dealer Story

Hello Everyone:I used to visit this dealer until recently.He does not like the grading services at all.He says that only about 3% of all coins are graded accurately.Any of my coins that I show him that graded AU or MS are only "extra fine" in his opinion.He also says that there is really only three grades of coins - very good,extra fine,and uncirculated.Finally,he's complaining that business is off 40% this year!!While I find value in being conservative with grading coins,I think this guy is overkill.Do you know any dealers like this?

When dealers are buying from you the coins are AU!

When dealers sell to you the same coins are MS65!

So long as he charges for the grades, thats not bad if he undergrades everything.

One of my local guys told me he can't grade anything better than MS63, because he doesn't trust his skill beyond that level. He's been in the coin business a very long time. I like him, and believe he is sincere. I buy from him pretty frequently, but rarely sell him anything. He told me not long ago of plans to open a storefront in one of the outlying towns to buy. They don't like retail, and are considering eliminating it. Pretty interesting.
