  • I highly doubt you'll find any (or many) Ikes. I work in a bank and we very seldom see any, just the occasional one or two that someone brings in. We even tried ordering some from our downtown vault once, and were told they couldn't be ordered. In essence it's a crapshoot and a matter of timing; asking at the bank when they just happen to have a few that someone brought in. image

There are still Sacs and SBAs, but they're even hard to find. I specifically ask for dollar coins in change, but seldom get them.

If you're looking for circulated Sacs or SBAs the post office is the place to get them. The automated stamp machines give change in dollar coins. I'm noot sure why, but I enjoy getting a few with my stamps and spending them around town.

There are a couple Ike's in circulation. I spent 2 of my "junk" Ikes at the corner market the other day image

I gave an Ike to the Domino's kid tonight as part of his tip image

    I probably have over 300 Ikes now...most all circ..most VF-AU/BU.
Outside of my dansco album of them (filled) I have no '73 Ikes. I have ons and tons of '76 and '74 and a good amount of '78, '77, '72 with some '71s.

They are the heavy coins though...I have thought about ebaying them (seen a number go for $1.55 each + s/h..circ...) but wouldn't know how to do the shipping and I don't want to rip anyone with too much s/h.

I ordered them through one of my banks....first batch took a few weeks, but got them. Others found out what I was doing and asked for them too image
Another batch came in and I got some of those as well (Merchant Teller likes me after we traded old work stories and so he "remembered" that he had some more...heh).

So, they are out there, just not really circulating because most people won't put them into their pocket to spend and if they do, it doesn't go into a normal spot on the till like the quarters, etc.

I need to get some holders for some of mine.... Atarian, where did you get them, what kind, and did you get a good price?

Every time I deposit my paycheck I take out some small amount in cash which is an odd multiple of $5. Usually the teller is stupid enough to ask me something like, "and how would you like that back, sir?". I usually reply somenthing like "golden doubloons or Spanish pieces of eight will suffice". Once the teller has recovered, I ask if she has any one dollar coins. If the answer is not "no" I am usually asked if I will accept silver ones or if I need the gold ones. When I learn that the teller has access to five silver ones I always ask for the large old ones. (The last real silver dollar I received from a bank was a 1921 Morgan in 1978)

Only once in the last year did this procedure get me a pair of clad Ikes (1971-D and 1976-D) which I had fun spending. Most of the time I'll take my change in SBAs, which I enjoy giving out as tips when I receive poor service in a restaurant. If these are not available, I'lll take Sacagaweas, which invariably make the day of a homeless panhandler.

I use two different banks with several branches here in Chicago, and find that my request for 5 $1 coins is granted roughly 3 out of 4 times, although the tellers often wonder why.

  • Well after lurking I decided to join in.

I normally go after kennedy halves, but for fun I asked my normal stop if they had any large dollars. They had over a hundred they were anxious to get rid of. Not being rich I got $50 worth in three separate stops. Nothing special but fun to get after not seeing any for seven years. I've given two to my nephews, spent eight and plan on spending the other 11.
