a twist on the A.T. -vs- N.T. issue that bothers me, no not the same old issues

Recently I was looking at a coin that I'm thinking about because it has beautiful natural looking color, well if the color is natural and the coin has tons of eye appeal whats the problem ? The problem is the history of dipping coins, how long ago were the various methods of cleaning/dipping coins invented ? Was it a long time ago or relitivly recently that it could be done well ?

What I'm getting at is say a coin was dipped x number of years ago and done expertly with no damage to the surface, no lose of visible luster, no dipp residue left on the coin. The coin is then put in an albulm of some type and left there for 30 or 40 years, then it developes beautiful natural toning. Isn't the reason coins like that are described by the experts as "market exceptable" is because even the highly paid graders at the major slabbing services can't tell the difference on such coins ?

Should I assume on most silver coins 100-200 years old in mint state with beatiful light to medium toning are dipped & retoned over time if they are not dark ? If the experts can't tell then how can I ?

Remember, I'm talking about coins with no dipp residue and that don't have a washed out look to the luster.

The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.

Les, if neither you nor the experts can tell, why assume one way or the other? My suggestion would be to question it and study it, but don't "assume" it. Now, if you're talking about 100-200 year old coins with no toning, odds are most excellent that they have been dipped, especially those 200 year old ones.image

I believe just a dip and re-tone they will still slab them. It's not like a cleaning with hairlines. So to try and help with some of your concerns.... it's not that a dip and re-tone "Made it" past the graders. They slab these all the time as far as what I see out there.

A clean and re-tone if it were to make it past the graders, will usually have an unnatural appearance in the way the color (or toning) will sit on the surface. Also the color will have a very unreal look.

Usually if one knows a certain series they know how they usually tone up and what the certain "Look" is for the given series or the times.

Study study study, is the best way. And if you get it and it just doesn't look right.... it's probably not. The gut feeling is usually the one to go with.

If it's a dip and re-tone, I believe if your experienced and familiar with looking at toned coins you will just know it when you see it. Hope this helps a little.
