Grade the Barber Dime Please :)

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine came across this 1901S Barber Dime this weekend. Please help me put a grade to it. I am guessing F-12? The brown stuff on it is just mud that will easily come off. He found it metal detecting. Thanks for your help.

1901-S is a better date Barber dime.

I say VF30- pushing XF40 but barely if at all. Lets say VF35 with some dog turd stuck on the reverse for fun! image

    Yikes!

I guess I still need to work on my grading lol

At least I'm undergrading instead of overgrading image

I'll let my buddy know, I can't believe he dug that up and FOR FREE! Nice profit margin huh? lol
  • Talk about lucky, that's a $400 coin. image
    I'd say VF+

This is a key date coin from my favorite series, and the one I can grade with confidence. Details seem to be XF-40, as long as the headband below LIBERTY is complete. However, I am at a loss how to net grade this, not knowing what the "dog turd" on the reverse from 7 to 9:00 might be or if it can be saely removed. If I saw these pictures on eBay, I'd say it's worth more than my F-15 of this date and would risk $250 or more. Note that the value of this date doesn't increase dramatically from F to VF to XF. A $500 AU it's not!

    You guys...

The "dog turd" stuff is just wet mud.....he had dug this out of the wet ground at a park just before the pics were taken. The mud will wipe off completely and easily with a soft rag/water without damage to the coin.

Good news! Can you post a pic with the wet mud/dog turds removed?

I may be able to eventually but not as of now. I don't have the coin, it was found by a buddy of mine who still does not know the value of the coin image He will when he wakes up and reads our metal detecting forum lol I'll see if he can get "post dog turd" pics.

It was found in Manteca, California.

Congratulations to your buddy! Manteca is my favorite Dizzy Gillespie composition, and 1901-S is a key date in my favorite series. I wish him luck in washing off the mud and look forward to the next pix.
