Which Lincoln cent will be the first $100,000 coin in auction ?

As Lincoln cents are described as NUCLEAR by David Hall,A Proof 1963 graded as perfect sold for $39,000. There has been a private sale in excess of $100,000 for a mint state coin. The really high priced pieces have never hit the auction block in the past two years.

Which date and in which grade will break the $100,000 barrier if it was to be sold in the next 30 days ?

1909 VDB in Proof 67
A Matte Proof 68 Lincoln cent
1963 Proof 70 D Cameo

1909 s VDB ms 67 red
1914 D in ms 66 red
1917 DDO ms 67 red
1919 ms 69 red
1922 No D
1926 s ms 65 red
1955 DDO ms 65 red
1969 s DDO ms 64 red
1969 s DDO ms 65 red

other....list date and grade

ps A few 1943 copper cents have been sold for over $100,000 at auction including the 1943 D which brought over $200,000 and is now in a private collection.

I don't know, but I sure hope it's a rare date/variety in a super grade, not just a grade rarity!

A toss up between:A Matte Proof 68 Lincoln cent or 1926 s ms 65 red, where I assume the Matte Proof is red.

The 1922 no D in 66. If one were to be graded in the next 30 days.

My second would the 1914-D you describe.

Does anyone know what the highest price realized for a Zinc 44P, D, or S has gone for.
And what about a 17 Matte Proof. (Has any ever been certified.)

  • My..O'K, it's not mine anymore...?????'s 1919-S MS66RD might come close. I think a spectacular 09-S VDB in 67RD or similar quality 14-D in 66RD might also come close. I know there are some people out there collecting Lincolns that don't seem to care about cost, but personally I wouldn't pay over $50,000-$60,000 for any of these coins.

Hands down the 1969 s DDO in gem full red would blow your minds, if the auction were held,at the price it would bring.
My guess is it would approach $250,000

    Stewart,

Lookin at your list I would guess the following:
    1919 Ms-69R or
    1926-s Ms-65R

The 17, 69 DDo' s and the 22 No D are super super tuff, but are limited to only those people collecting registry complete sets with varieties.
09-s vdb and 14-d and 55 DDO have other available specimens in those grades!

I choose a possiblilty of those two becuase these are coins in the basic mint state set that only a single specimen exists at the top grade level and many would want to own the highest graded for that particular coin for registry.

Of cousrse, I dont know didly compared to you folks on lincolns, but that is my educated guess!!!

I guess I was wrong as usual!!!

Anyone who would pay anything close to $100,000 for ANY Lincoln needs to reexamine their priorities, and not just their collecting priorities.

I agree with the 1926-s Ms-65R, if it were genuinely PQ and spectacular as per strike and eye appeal--if such a thing exists.
  • Stewart- You own most of those. Are you trying to tell us something? Prying minds would like to know.

As a Lincoln Proof man,I'd say the 1909 Matte PR67 RD.Second guess would be the 1917 DDO MS67 RD.Next would be your 1919 MS69 RD(truely an awesome coin!

I would think the 1959 wheat cent, if slabbed by PCGS, would go for $100K. So far I believe the only thing it has going for it is that the Secret Service has declared it "not counterfeit", on the other hand, they haven't called it genuine either. But it is legal to own (for now), which the 1974 aluminum cents probably aren't. Actually I shouldn't say "legal" I should say "subject to seizure".

Unbelievable that in my lifetime any Lincoln cent would fetch over $100,000, let alone a quarter of a million dollars. MUCH to rich for my blood.

I would say congratulations to those who had the forsight to see that Lincolns would become so popular. It's a great series (in retrospect).

"...what about a 17 Matte Proof (Has any ever been certified.)"

I've not seen a pop report lately, but as far as I know no 1917 Matte Proof has been positively identified (nor do I believe will one ever be).

  • My guess is the '19 MS69 with the '26-S MS65 close behind. I know I offered Stewart $150,000 for the '19 and he just laughed at me! image

    Hmmmm......Stew excellent question.

I personally think the 1909VDB with the Indian Head reverse would command the $100K first.

Oh that coin doesn't exist?????.............oh well good try!

I like that 1959 cent with the wheat reverse if it were authenticated by PCGS/NGC.

Secondly, the 1943PDS copper cent in MS-65 if found would also do the trick.

The 1969-SDDO in MS-65 would look like a winner as well but heck the 26-S in MS-65RD is also a monster.

By the way, why is a 1969-S DDO MS-64RD also on the list along with the 65RD version?

Now I would like hearing $100K for the 55DDO because I am biased towards that coin.

But don't lforget, the 1972 DDO cent in MS-67/68RD could someday hit that $100K threshold shortly after the others hit the tape and went out to celebrate.

  • Hey oreville - how about the first non-error/variety Lincoln? I still go with the '19.

Mike: I don't know. That is a tough call.

When even Jay Parrino tells me the Lincoln Cents are getting crazy in price at levels he could not even fathom, then I start to lose perspective. He has predicted the price phenomen on these cents long before anyone else did. But now Jay, like wondercoin are wondering.

I wonder too. The 1919 cent will make it first, if conditon rarity of the 69RD kind takes hold. If so, then all the 1919 BU cent rolls will come to market.

If the stopper of the entire cent series is needed then the 26-S in MS65RD will cross the line first.
