Question for Kennedy or Ike collectors

I received a 1976 three pice silver proof set today. Anyone know how to get the coins out of the plastic rounds without damage to the coin?

Thanks, mike

I have had a very hard time with those. My latest method involve taking a C-Clamp and tightening it on the sides until it starts to crack. I then loosen it, and rotate the holder and repeat. After a few times I look for a good crack I can pry it open from. It's like these things are glued shut.

Must be glued. I can't seem to get a start with a pocket knife. No C clamp here abouts. I do have a vice at work just wasn't planning on going the for a couple weeks due to holiday shut down. S'pose i could wait.

Thanks for the input - itsnotjustme

  • Why do you want to take them out...Are you going to submit them? I would just leave them in.

    That's an order

    Yessir, well, nosir.

I'm building a Kennedy and dollar set. Won't fit in the books that way.

Going to submit the Ike. I need to for my proof registry I'm putting together. Outside of that...I'd leave em image
  • I've actually done it a few times using kids suction darts on both sides, but if its stuck tight yeah C-clamp/vice
    sounds like a good option.
Another way,and this is assuming you have a bit of room to work with around the coin,is to take a dremel
tool with a small drill bit, drill small holes in both sides, then use some of those dental tool hooks,or fabricate
a metal rod with a hooked end,and pop them right open.
I've used this method with the airtites that have that foam ring, which leaves alot of room to work with
    away from the coin.
Obviously not a viable option if the coin is snug.

  • Another good way is to use a pair of vise grips.

Vise grips, vises, clamps, dremels, C4 HE what next??image

Just putting a little levity into the thread. I think a dremel would work well with the small cutting wheel. Then you could just lightly score the very edge of the airtight and work from there. Room to work provided of courseimage

I've had luck by simply twisting the holder...
