Rare Kennedy error!!! Enjoy!!!

I was at my local dealer about a month ago, and he handed a 2000 mint set and told me to take a look. The first thing I noticed was that there were 2 Kennedys in the slot for the half dollar. We did a lot of weighing and thinking that afternoon and came to the conclusion that the one Kennedy had to be struck on a SBA planchlet. Vince took the coin along to the Baltimore show and gave it to ANACS. They took it along and certified it as such.....Ken

A superb $1.50 error. $1.50's are among the rarest out there. A truly superb find! Congradulations.

Very cool, Ken! I'm curious as to what the pair would go for?

The matched set takes this to the next level. I have mixed feelings on the certification. It is certainly needed for authentication, but it must have been especially interesting in the original mint packaging.

  • What is the singificance of the second half dollar?
  • Very cool!

I'm not an error guy but I would think this one is worth significantly more than $500 since it's a 2000 coin struck on a 1999 planchet.

The significance of the original packaging pedigree is all the more intriguing and more desirable.

Very nice strike for such big dies on a little planchet.

It is extremely unusual to find any sort of significant error in a mint set. I've
never seen anything of note except a few small clipped planchets and a die
    adjustment strike.

  • That is nice pair Ken!! Thanks for sharing with the group!image

I thought from the header that possibly the error was the mint was still punching out that old nasty coin!!image

    Ken,

Very cool, and possibly unique, especially with the dual attribution.

  • Yeah I recently found two small errors on State Quarters (Some of you may have seen the thread). I know it really doesn't bring much of premium, being just a small srike-through and a small die gouge, but I am wondering about putting them up on EBay to see what it's worth to the common person who has started up "Coin Collecting" with the state quarters. I know there have been quite a few people who have picked up coin collecting with the State Quarters. *shrug* who knows, maybe I'll make a couple bucks on it if I have some good pics and start it at 0.99 with No Reserve. Funny thing is, I wasn't specifically looking for errors when looking through my quarters, I was looking for quarters for one that might be possible for a submission and grading (None even game close to breaking MS-65, though the luster on some of them is outstanding) and came across the errors. Wish me luck as I list them on EBay after the 1st of the year!

That is truly a cool error. Lucky dealer. image I like that ANACS allowed the notation on the other half, too.
  • Ken - that's about as weird an error as I've ever seen - exceptionally cool is that ANACS is willing to certify the coin along with it's partner and the story - very cool indeed!!

Your link to the coins is just a big red X in a square box. I can't get to your link (picture)

In fact, I never have been able to get to your links (past 5 months)

Anybody know what I need to do to adjust my computer to get to Ksteelheader's links?

    Thanks,

You can try to get the pics by right-clicking on the red X and choose SHOW PICTURE.
    Sometimes that works, sometimes not.

I wonder about the grades of these two coins.
    One is a 65 and the other only a 60 ?

Was the 60 just poorly struck or poorly mishandled or both?

  • The MS60 was poorly struck due to the SBA planchlet. It just did not completely fill out....Ken

Pretty cool error. I love the "interlocking" between the slabs that ANACS did referring to the original mint set.

I am a little surprised it only graded MS60 having never left the set. Hmmm.
