Mercury Newb Help Please!!

Ok, I'm stilling learning about grading Mercury Dimes, I have an A.N.A. Grading Standards book and all, and it has helped a lot, but I'm trying to learn to discern between AU-55, AU-58, and MS-60... so, if anyone can post pictures of examples, and close ups of the high points, I would appreciate it very, very much!!!

  • I have searched the forums of archives, but nothing on this subject for Mercurys has come up, though I did find a discussion about the differences from AU to MS... but it was specifically helpful in the field that I have choosen to collect in...

Ultimately what you will want to do is go to one of the ANA's grading classes. Either the summer seminar or the three day mini seminar. VERY educational. Everyone who has been to one has gained from it. Ultimately the only way to learn the differences is to see enough examples. Go to shows and shops and ask the dealers this question. Most dealers are willing to help educate you. And be sure to see lots of the best coins, too. When you see what a coin is capable of looking like, you'll understand better why coins grade in the way they do and how a coin degrades from perfect to the various forms of circulation.
