    thanks Frank...

i was just looking thru some bank rolls when i found this ...
its not just a partial curve of a "D" ....Its the whole darn thing!!!!

and it matches up in size and shape of the D used in those years!

    weird huh?

now i know that the D's are made into the master hub starting in 1990 but its like a mint employee got bored ...set a punch and hit it ...
just for grins ......well didn't coppercoins and billy crawford authenticate a year 2000 someting doubled die?

even with the single squeeze meathod?

so why not a doofus at the mint ?.....isn't history at the mint full of doofus's

    yer right ......

    i didn't photo it

but it looks like a partial of another D....like a bad "first" hit with the punch ...and then the die cracked from use

sounds too good to be true ...one can hope tho!

From the evidence I can see it would be a convincing proposal as a mintmark - IF - the rest of the die crack wasn't all around it shouting, "hey...we're just a die crack." What it looks like to me is an elaborate die crack that developed and spread like a crack on a windshield. The crack progressed and took the path of least resistance, which would be around a device, then it split straight across when it reached the end of the inside of the 9. That would create a "D" shape turned 90 degrees CCW.

Two things other than that would also immediately draw my attention inward for answers....

    1. in 1994 the mintmarks were included on the master die and hubbed into the working hubs, which were then transferred to the working dies...how could a D have been 'punched' erroneously on any die given that mintmark punches were retired five years previous?

    2. If that's a D mintmark on that 9, where are the serifs? Have you done an overlay with a D mintmark from the same year to ensure beyond a shadow of a doubt that it carries the exact same shape and size as the mintmark letter? I'd bet it doesn't.

I believe it's a die crack that came out looking like a D....not an erroneous mintmark. If you'd like to send it in for further examination and inclusion on coppercoins.com, feel free to contact me.

    Still cool though.

How common are die cracks on moderns?

A die crack that elaborate is actually quite unusual. I doubt it would win much of a premium with anyone, but it's definitely not common.

Only thing you'll get from them is a grade. They don't bother with attributing proposed new varieties. They will annotate a die number on obvious ones that have been published for years, though.
