Do you think this is real?

Has an odd look to it - almost high relief...

The face looks a little off compared to other pictures of that date. Her nose and mouth.
    Raw gold on eBay hmm...

    Its raw. Why?
    All glory is fleeting.
  • I dont know much about gold coins...but it does look "off" compared to other coins pix.

The seller has been around since April of 1999 and has 438 with a 100% feedback though. Seems trustworthy.

It looks fake in the scan. I'd be surprised if it looked much different in person, but it's possible.

My email correspondence with the seller:
Would you be willing to extend your 7 day return privilege? If I won this coin, I'd send it to ANACS for Express service, but Registered mail round trip would probably be 10 days or so. I'd keep the coin if real and problem-free, but otherwise would want to return it.

    He responds:
My return policy used to have no time limit on it. I changed it recently
because I had a problem with someone trying to swap a coin on me. I
changed it to 7 days so that I would know about any potential problems
sooner rather than later. Of course I'm not saying you would try to pull
a switcheroo but I have to stick to my 7 day return policy from now on,
especially on a high dollar item like this. FYI - I am not a dealer, just
    a collector.

Maybe this is not the coin for you. I buy most of my certified coins from
Heritage - they have some nice early gold going on the auction block in
their January Signature sale. I highly recommend their services.

I respond (thinking how does extending the time limit encourage a switcheroo?):
It sounds like you are trying to dissuade me from bidding. Maybe that's why you have such a good feedback record. You only get bids from newbies and greedy suckers. Hint taken!

well, he's also selling this "coin"

    definitely fake

as well as a colonial that he admits is a copy.

my vote is that the 1799 is not genuine.

maybe so, but sure looks like a bad cast counterfeit. I wouldn't buy any of this seller's gold.

Man, this thing looks horrible! I would only have it in my collection if someone gave it to me. And if it actually proved to be gold, then I'd sell it for bullion.

How does a 7 day return stop someone from switching coins if they want image

That has always been a concern of mine when selling coins on ebay. I can take photos of my coins but there is no serial number or anything. How can you tell if you are getting back what you sent?

I think it should be melted and sold as scrap.

I could pick my coins out of a lineup anyday. I guess if I was dealer turning over many coins every day it would be hard to tell.
There must be some kind of seal you could put on a 2x2 that you could tell if the coin was removed.

I can't tell if it's real or fake, but the obverse is rather polished, suggesting ex-jewelry. But it could be fake, for all I know. Why isn't it slabbed????

  • I don't know anything about gold coinage but that coin has a "modern" look to it if you will.
