    1 Nice Key date

I guess if I had to, I could make it one silver key date coin though.image

  • CaptainRon, why just one coin? If silver explodes and you have 1000 oz of silver which would turn more porfit...that one expensive coin or the silver Bullion?

With "very expensive" amounts of money, I'd buy stock in mining companies. Trading costs are a fraction of what would be spent round-trip trading a high-dollar coin, or bullion.

And free checkwriting , to boot!
  • In light of today's economic scenario, I'll take the giant paperweight

  • fishcooker, you have not been reading....what if hard silvers total supply has been depleted...and You buy shares of stock in a Silver Minning...many silver mines today that are known have very little silver left....new deposits have to be found before new mining of silver can begin...it takes 1 to 3 years to set up and get under way...plus you have inexperinced people as silver minning has not been done for at least 50 years.....now where is that Minning Company going to come up with the money to Mine the Silver after it finds a deposit...your left holding the paper...when you could have bought the real thing cheap.
  • I'd buy the Bullion. With the current PM market conditions I expect the POS to continue to increase, and I expect the coin market to decline as it has had a nice run and it is after all, cyclical. But, after selling the 1,000 oz ingot at the market high, I would be buying two of those "expensive" silver coins at the market low.image

I personally would rather have coins. Sure you probably would make money on the Bullion, but over time you can't loose on a key date either.

But I don't have $6,000's of play around with either, so that is probably why I choose the keydate coin.

  • Jim, right on...my exact thoughts.
  • I'll take a nice coin that you can enjoy over a paperweight any day! image

  • image better duck and cover......this sounds just like the post I put up a year or so ago. Many of the forum members flammed me because I wanted to address the issues of silver investment Vs. collecting. Seems most folks are here for the enjoyment of collecting, without a thought to the investment involved. (Yeah...right).

I would buy as many ASE's as I could. I am an American. If I were Canadian I would buy Maples. If I were Asian I would buy Pandas. I think you get the picture.....

As you talked about in an earlier thread....just make sure you are getting silver not stainless steel. You need to trust whomever you are buying from.

  • Travis, I am a collector too and want to remain one...but when you can make a good buck on bullion and turn around and buy what ever coin you want...I am going for all I can get...I understand where you are coming from.

I'm probably wrong on this but anyways....

It seems to me you have much more flexabilty in the amount of time to turn a coin and still gain a profit, even if the coin market started to flounder. However with Bullion, waiting just a couple of days too long could be disastrous. Seems way to risky for someone as flighty as myself. I could just see me being on a week long vacation or hunting trip somewhere, when it happens to start to fall.
I guess if you can time the "By Low, Sell High" just right you would be a fool not to. However I know I can not, so I will not attempt it.

Travis.....I would reconsider the choices of the bullion.

When Warren Buffet first took his silver position a few years ago and it ran to (forget) $7.50 or so, the ASE's had NO premium over just plain generic rounds. In fact, the only silver trading at near to spot was 1000 oz "good delivery" Comex bars as no further processing had to be done to use them to satisfy delivery requirements on the Comex.
Comex contracts are for 5000 oz of silver in 1000 oz bars. 5000 1 oz coins, or ingots will NOT be accepted. They have to be melted into 1000's first.
However, if you are a long hauler and expect silver to REALLY soar for long enough for the numb American public, 1 oz weights are the best for resale.
In 1980 we were selling 1 oz rds for $54 per and 100 oz bars for $4800

Topstuff, for how many days where you selling 1 once rounds for $54.00 in 1980. From what I understand, when silver peaked in 1980, it shot up very fast, but came down even quicker.

I will answer this question with an answer of neither.

Instead.....I would buy $1000 face of liberty walking halves. In fact, I already do. They are in VF-AU condition.

Just imagine running thousands of little walkers through your fingers!!!!!!!image

there is nothing like it. Except well.......... running $1 Moragn/Peace dollars or better yet.......$20 Liberties and Saint Gaudens through your fingers!!!image

    (Or $50 Panama-Pacific gold pieces!!!)
