1943D quarter

not the high grade but there is some evedence that theres a 47 hiding under the 43. im sure much wont be able to tell the 7 but theres a 4 to the left slightly off from the bold 4 is what do you think. i first thought wiht the 3 it looked like it was dirt or something. but it isnt hurt. tried rubbing it out witha cloth. still there. like it was with the coin from teh start. any ideas

A die gouge is where the person working on the die accidentally gouges the die. Since on a die the fields are the highest point, any gouge will look raised when struck on a coin. I'm saying this is the most likely cause. If I remember right, they hadn't used date punches for decades at that time, and an overdate would only be possible from a 1937 quarter which is obviously next to impossible. That's why I think the gouge is the most likely.
  • Atarian...is that your picture? If so, you've gotten pretty good with the coin photos!
  • it is my picture.

ive been saying for the longest time its either in my head or something cause it looks like a 1937 or 47 witha 1943 over it. the 9 looks like its slightly possible i dont know if there is a way a 37 could have been used on a 1943 strike. i think if it is a restrike maybe its of a 1943/47 but i dont know how likely that could be. the did have 1851 large cents with 1881 struck under. but die gauge doesnt sound too badly. is it?

An inverted logotype was resposible for the 1851/81 Large Cent. Logotypes for entering the date have not been used since at least 1916 on working dies.

    Impossibility that it's a 43/47, it just couldn't happen.

A 43/37 would be remotely possible - about as possible as snow in the Amazon, but still possible.

What you have, however, appears very much to be a die gouge and nothing else. The mark is too high to be part of a 7 and does not show the type of relief it should if it were a 7.
