"Heller probably never thought that he would get caught and he did."

Paul: Heller didn't "get caught" - he sold his collection a year or two ago as the "slam dunk" #1 set. image

Would Nick have caught him had he never sold? - same question as who is the greatest fighter - Ali at his prime or Tyson at his prime (you get it)?

I have a good idea which fighter was more intelligent in his prime ( or was it just Howard Cossell made Ali look good)

I think Nick is showing a high degree of intelligence by NOT biting on this greedy dealers auction! NO FREAKING WAY is that coin worth $10K!!

Its worth what someone will pay, and I have a question for Nick: Have you/will you e-mail this guy to actually see what his absolute rock bottom price would be, especially since the acution has been extended several times now?

Obviously it is NOT worth 10K because it is still for sale.

    Wondercoin,
No one is better the ALI, thats why he was #1 or #2 (I forget) all time athlete of all time. I think that MJ was #1, anyway, Tyson ended his fights in 90 seconds or less most of the time and if he went 3 or 4 rounds he would have needed oxygen and a coffee break! Also he didn't fight the caliber of fighters as Ali did. IMHO, Tyson is a punk and if I had his kind of $$$ (300 Million), I would give Eliasberg a run for his money as all time greatest numismatic. image

does anyone know what eBay charges when the seller closes auction early?

the listing fee with category featured probably was close to $20 - do they end up paying none, some, all when cancelled?

just curious because I may list some items, feature them at retail + price and cancel in the last day if no bids

Sinin1, no charge for ending an auction early. For "big" coins like that one, you might consider listing a coin on ebay to be advertising in a fashion - you never know when someone likes the coin but not the pricevand emails a seller with an offer. Seller ends the auction and doesn't pay ebay fees - on a $10k coin at say 1.5%, that's saving $150. I acyually think there was a poll recently in the Coin Forum and contacting sellers to buy a coin "off" ebay was one of the choices.....and as I recall the results, less than 10% of those that responded said that was how they buy coins they like on ebay.

I believe the seller still has to pay the listing fee.

This has to do with one's thoughts of the future of a coin, a coin series and the coin industry in general. When I got started, building registry sets were considerably less expensive, and provided perhaps less risk than they do now. Although I think the industry looks very good now, and the near- to mid-term, there could be other positive opportunities that mirror those provided by the coin market in '99-2000. I still haven't found anything as much fun yet, though!

Paul, After the auction closed I made a sight seen offer and was told they would get back to me.
Thats where it stands. I don't feel compelled to chase the coin or any coin for that matter. I
guess deep down I'm really hoping another collector steps up.

    Nick,
Why did you bother to go through the trouble to assemble the finest known Roosevelt set if you really don't care if this coin is purchased by another person? You could possibly have a perfect set. If I were in your shoes, I would TRY to get that coin if needed, but thats just what I would do. I totally respect your opinion on this matter. 10K or whatever is paid for the coin is alot of money. Whatever decision you make, I wish you only the best.

    My 2 cents:

Sometimes it is better to take one step back to go two steps forward. Nick knew that the top unregistered collection already had this date in MS68FB. So, one of a couple things could happen with the ebay coin:

    1. The price on the 48(p) would drop to a level Nick was comfortable buying it for his set; or

    2. Someone would step up and pay $10,000 for the pop 2 Roosie, potentially increasing the value of Nick's overall collection by a large amount of money (which has its fair share of pop 1 and pop 2 MS68FB Roosies).

Classic - one step back to go 2 forward the way I see it. I truly believe Nick will not regret his decision no matter what happens from here. image
