Craig: No thanks. Already have that date in PCGS-MS68FB. image

It must have been an oversight for the seller to state the coin they are selling is a pop 1/0 - I assume PCGS is a little slower this week in getting all the coins just made in Baltimore on the on-line report. I suspect it will show up next week.

Mitch - thanks! Nick sent me the ebay link initially and said he thrpought you had the pop-1 MS68FB.....so this was either a 2nd coins that hasn't hit the pop reports yet OR yours is looking ofr a new home (which I thought was unlikely). This is however, certainly a strong asking price.........

"This is however, certainly a strong asking price...."

Craig: With all the excitement around here lately involving the upcoming Showdown, why not ask five figures? image Also, Nick has his set open - one can plainly see Nick "desparately" needs this date. I think Nick would be the first to tell you IF HE HAD TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN, he would never have opened his Roosie collection in the first place.

Obviously, it is clear (to me at least) Nick has little interest in the dime at, or near the asking price (as evidenced by your public post). But, I certainly hope a new player steps up and buys it. I believe we would all enjoy the "competition" image

It is a pop 1 coin (at least as far as the seller knows). The fact Nicks set is open is irrelevant to this coin. Just because your set is open and someone can see you "need" a coin, you are not obligated to "pay the price" to acquire it. Exercise some self control (which Nick seems to be doing even with an open set). If no one shows interest in the coin at the asking price, then it will go unsold or be reduced in price. If someone else jumps in to "pay the price", what would that have to do with an open or closed set.

Mitch, You are exactly right.. I never thought Roosies would become what they have. As a number 1
set holder I have seen the light and never would have opened my set knowing back then what I know
today. I feel its to late for that so my set will remain open. I have only paid up for 1 of my MS68FB Roosies
and don't feel I need to start now. I do hope the coin sells and a new player evolves. We will see...

As a note, David Hall had 3 MS68FB Roosies on thier site over the past 8 Months, all priced at this
level and all 3 have disappeared. Did they sell?...Is there another player out there?...It would sure
be nice if the answer to both these questions is Yes.

Dbldie55, I'm in a very comfortable position as a number 1 set holder and its very easy for me to
exercise self control when need be. But more important to me is the coin. I'm trying to create a high
quality set and if the coin doesn't stand on its own then there is no place in my set for it at this or
anywhere near this price level. I do understand why set holders close there sets. Its very easy for
someone to hold you hostage for a top pop coin thats fits in your set. We are all human and sometimes
let our emotions get the best of us, Especially if its a coin we would really like to have.

Craig: The other 48(p) Roosie is a drop dead gorgeous rainbow coin - an incredible specimen (along the lines of your 49(p) quarter except in a different color pattern). It is now part of a special Roosie collection I am assisting a collector with (the unregistered set that may give Nick a "run for his money" next June) - just another coin I could not continue to own. I slabbed the coin myself as the PCGS-MS68 (PCGS added the bands to it earlier this year) for Registrycoin (Steve) a year or two ago. It was one of my most special colorful Roosies and probably still ranks up there as one of the coolest 1/2 dozen PCGS-MS68FB Roosies ever slabbed IMHO. image

I don't think that the price for this coin is unfair at all. I think with such a "hot" series as the Roosevelts have become, that this coin may receive a bid. There alot of series out there that pop 1 coins receive $10,000 bids. It will be exciting to see if there is another high grade Roosie player.

Shoot, I don't even have $10,000 in monopoly $$$. imageimage

Craig, There are 18 MS68FB Roosies listed on the pop report. there are 3 that were recently made
that are not on the pop report. None of the 3 was a new date or a pop 1/0. Out of the 21 MS68FB's
there are 12 different dates. There are several MS67FB's with lower pops then some of the MS68FB
dates. Similar to the wash quarter's.

You know, if the price was $7500 BIN, I think there would be a good chance the coin would already be sold (not sure too whom though). So the question is, for a pop-2 coin, is $10,000 too much? I have seen this seller offering some very PQ color toned pieces over the last year and the asking prices are always strong.........I'm certainly not a MS68FB buyer and like others have voiced, I'd sure like tosee a new player step up and grab this uber GEM and put it in a set.

Mitch, when your new collector does Register their set, will the set be open and have pics?? I'd love to see this other 48P you mention as it sounds stunning!

I truly wonder how bad they want to sell that coin on eBay

why didn't they pop an extra dime to run a 10 day auction instead of a 3 DAY AUCTION

even though the pictures are fine, they could have cropped out the slab

did they just put it up, hoping someone will email them an acceptable offer? (if it does not sell)

I checked the counter at the bottom of the auction and it read 395. I think 3 days was plenty, especially
with the attention it received from the board. It the coin does receive a bid it would more then likely be
in the last minute of the auction.

either they changed the length or I read it wrong last time (which I doubt)

I know you can change title (like they did) or description before any bids, but did not know you could change auction length -

anyone have any ideas on this?

The eye appeal and color on this seem like nothing special to me.
Not sure why this is not a $75-$150 coin. I've only owned one MS68 early roosie and it was flawless with mind altering color rings. Eventually that one is gonna end up in a NGC68* or 69 holder.

$10,000 seems a little stiff considering I can own a finest graded better date seated dime, quarter or half for about the same money or less. The next grade down on the Roosie is worth $150. Next grade down on the seated coin is $5000. A little difference in the downside to be sure. A market where the next grade is 50-100X higher seems very arbitrary, with 10x more downside than upside.

Auction entended for 2 more days.

Roadrunner: I hear you. But, consider this -

    1. If this was the 1948(p) Lincoln Cent in PCGS-MS68RD (pop 1), you would have a $30,000 coin IMHO.

    2. If this was the 1948(p) Jefferson in PCGS-MS68FS (pop 1), you would have a $25,000 coin IMHO

    3. If this was the 1948(p) quarter in PCGS-MS68 (pop 1) (which I own), you would have a $15,000+ coin IMHO.

    4. If this was the 1948(p) half in PCGS-MS67FBL (pop 1) you would have a $30,000 coin (actual sale) and figure $50,000++ for MS68FBL IMHO.

    5. If this was the 1948(p) BTW in PCGS-MS67 (pop 1 to be), you would have a $15,000 coin and figure around $50,000 for an MS68 IMHO.

IF YOU HAVE A 1948(p) ROOSIE IN PCGS-MS68FB (pop 2), it appears you might have a $7,500 - $10,000 coin IMHO.

WHICH COIN OF THESE 6 SELECTIONS MAKES THE MOST SENSE TO YOU

Don't have enough information to answer that question. I'd need to see the undergrade's price, pops and [gasp] actually look at each coin to assess its quality and value. If the coin historically comes nice and undergrades were readily available with pizzaz, I'd probably pass on the premium asked.

It's one thing to pay a premium for a 'work of art' [like that pretty quarter] that will never be copied - so if another is made the coin still stands on its own special qualities. It's quite another thing to pay a huge premium for something that looks like something else but has one less tick or line that can barely be seen.

It's odd when coin collectors pay more for the way a coin looks because of the way it was 'kept', which sometimes results in what some would call a "work of art", versus it's merits based on an accepted grading scale.

Perhaps buying coins for moon money is beginning to slow a bit.

    Wondercoin,

I passed on all those pop 1 Lincs and Roosies. Decided instead to purchase a pop 1 (finest graded) PCGS MS65 1841 half for about half the money. Felt that was a better upside to downside coin.

No disrespect to the post 1933 pop 1 coins, just feel the 19th and early 20th century low pop coins make more sense at relatively the same money.

Since Mitch loves to compare apples to oranges lets continue his ways:

What is the value of a 1893-S Quarter MS67 (pop2)
What is the value of a 1893-S Half MS66 (pop 1/0)
What is the value of a 1893-S Morgan MS67 (pop2)

I would bet the morgan is worth the most, by a large margin and it has nothing to do with the others. Why the value of a dime should have anything to do with a cent, nickel, quarter, half or commemorative is beyond me. Only those who hype what they sell can come up with this.

If they haven't received a bid yet I don't think they are going to. I also believe if an offer had been presented
that was close to the asking price the auction would not have been extended. They would have let it run out

I have to ask, since I'm in the same position w/ MS trade dollars, is this true? If you stand still, aren't new coins being made at a clip where eventually you are passed by? Granted, it'd be tougher in the trades than roosies, but the concept is the same. At what point is a set so great that you can hold your head high and pass on the shots taken at you? At what point does the drive that it took to get the set to the point it currently is become overwhelmed?

    StoogeStooge Posts: 4,702 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Tradedollarnut,
I think if Nick stopped right now and never added to his set, it would eventually get passed. Here is my theory:

Nick stated that he "Made" all but 1 MS68FB Roosevelt. I think that if you can make 1 date an MS68FB, you can make all of them. I know I'm going out on a limb when I say that, and Nick knows more about the silver Roosies then I do, but If you look through enough rolls, then you are bound to find a specimen out there. Not every roll and/or Roosevelt has been looked at. It may take years, but it may happen. High grade coins are being made everyday, and thats my theory.

Heller probably never thought that he would get caught and he did.

I agree that I can be selective. I still have that drive to build the finest set. But I will be very choosey.

    Rainbow Buddy

I guess you haven't visited my registry set, Have you?. Beauty is in the eye of the beholded

At what point is a set so great that you can hold your head high and pass on the shots taken at you?

When you have a 20 point lead.... The trades are quite different. When a top coin comes along and is offered
to you its not likely you will see another one soon. The Roosies on the other hand are just starting to come
into there own. I know the 48's come nice and the odds of another MS68FB being made at some point are
much higher then a top graded trade. I'm not totally turning my back on this coin. I'm just not a player at
10K for this coin. If the price was right I'm all over it....image

Paul, Your right on. If I stand still I will eventually be passed. Its inevitable. One point about my set
that I need to make clear. I Previously said I have only "paid up" for one of my MS68FB's. What
I mean is I've only had to pay top dollar for one. I have bought one other 68FB at a great price and
bought 2 others before FB at lower levels that eventually received the FB designation. I made 2 from
raw, got one upgrade and crossed the rest.

Depends on the set. Modern Roosevelt Proofs -- I have 73-03 in PR70. Only the 83 No. S has room for one higher, but it hasn't been made yet. There are only a handful of made coins that could better my set -- two in the regular set, and two in the varieties set. I know where half of them are (in sets), and it is mathematically impossible for anyone to get near my regular set in the near future. Several more coins will have to be made.

I think I can coast on that set and look for good buys when they come up.

Frankly I hope they do a combined 50-present Proof set. I think I can hold my own with that one.

    Like I said, I'm coasting.

TDN -- where are all these MS TD's going to come from???
