Indian Head Cents

I have a collection of 18 IHC so far and i've learned a fair amount about them, but i'd really like to have a complete and thorough knowledge of them so that i can improve my collection to the fullest potential of my wallet.

So, what are some quality books on Indian Head Cents that are worth reading and that will give me some pretty extensive knowledge of IHC.

thanks for your help.

Rick Snow has a few books out on IHCs and is considered the current expert on the series.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • thanks, anyone else know of any other authors or books that are pretty good in their knowledge and educational substance on IHC?

  • Steve,

Bower's book for sale on the Harlan Berk website is one of the better FE/IHC references available. If you look for a while on ebay it may pop up used for a lower price.

    Agree on Bowers book.

For Snows, I would recommend his attribution guides - more current and in depth than the original book. Available on his website or ebay. He also has a few articles on grading on the site.

The Flynn/Steve book on varieties has some good parts.

Recommend going to auctions when possible and looking at the coins there. Cover the grade and try to grade it yourself. You'll learn alot quickly, especially if it's a bullet sale and you can get a chance to see alot of cleaned, whizzed and o/w damaged coins. It will teach you what to look out for.

Finally, the Fly-In club is cheap to join and has a good quarterly news letter, back issues also available. The web site has useful info. such as variety population data.

Good luck - it's a fun, challenging series.
