It is good you are cautious, but, I will agree with others that your "legalize"/small print, is WAY too long, and WAY too hard reading. And, I am glad you will take out the context about shipping overseas for double the normal price. Someone reading your auction may assume (if they haven't sold on ebay) that the ebay option was wrong, or that you didn't want to ship overseas but would if someone really was willing to pay double the shipping.
I agree that you need to have something very liquid in your hands (funds-wise) prior to shipping the units. But, your auction text and emails are/were not bidder-friendly. I've never reneged, and would never renege (unless someone was dishonest/untrustworthy to me), and my funds will always be good (even when paid by personal check), but, your legalize is way too convoluted. I have seen it before and, truth to tell, I have just clicked on another link because I don't want to even bother. It makes you seem like a hard to get along with seller (and, that is probably not even close to the case...you are probably a great seller).
So, someone else suggested cutting your long list down to just a few necessaries....and I think that is well intentioned advice that should be listened to for the chance to get the most people interested and willing to bid on your items.
If this guy is legit, I hope it all works out. If it is a scam, I hope you are safe from it. The timezone thing, and working weird hours, wouldn't surprise me. As part of my job, I work with Japanese, Korean, and sometimes Chinese companies a lot. They work long hours. Sometimes on their weekends as well.
Isn't there a time limit a person has to make a claim with paypal? If this guy sends you cash from his bank account with paypal and you wait 30 days to ship then can he still screw you?
You are going through way too much hassle for this one transaction. This is a scam. Your next email to him should be as follows:
Dear Barron of Avely:
" You are hereby in breach of Ebay contract rules as well as my auction description. We are sorry that there was a problem in your comprehension of my auction rules and text description, but it is unmistakably accurate and to the point. We are therefore cancelling your bid in accordance to Ebay rules and contacting the next highest bidder. We wish you continued success in your Ebay bidding but strongly recommend that you read the seller's rules and guidelines prior to bidding. If there is a problem in comprehension, we suggest that you hire a translator who is more familiar with American culture and idioms. We are clearly in the right and if you threaten us further, it will be interpreted as financial cyberterrorism and forwarded to the Office of Homeland Security for further action in the appropriate department. Your paypal payment is hereby refunded. "

Dear Mr. Lerner,
We can send you US Dollars in Cash via register mail. However, how should we declare the parcel? Our legal advisor told me just now that we have to go through a special process at the post office to verify that we are sending you hard cash but you may have a problem receiving it as it is not legal to send cash in the US postal service. If the money gets confiscated by the US government and we can prove that we have sent it, would you assume all the liability? My colleague suggested the following alternative means which are all legal:
1. Bank transfer - i.e. directly depositing cash into your account (it takes 2 working days and we will be able to trace the transfer) 2. Bank draft or money order in US Dollars - it is as good as cash but you need to deposit it into your account 3. Transfer via the post office - You will have to collect the money at the post office physically and file a declaration with Inland Revenue 4. Credit card - You have to be set up with the credit card company first to receive payment 5. Set up an escrow (i.e. an independent third party such as a law firm, an escrow company or maybe even eBay)
I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Mr. Lerner,
I will look into Western Union and get back to you tomorrow.
My colleague provided me with the following procedure for sending and receiving money through Western Union. Please confirm your agreement with this procedure as you will have to go to a Western Union Agent to pick up the money. However, if you would accept a bank transfer, we can deposit the money into your bank account directly and our cost is lower.

I have read the comments, but think the thread may be a little prejedical. I found out Fedex is the way to go. When people start out on ebay and see something they have to have, sometimes bidding gets ahead of reality, and logistics. We have all had bidders like Mr. Yuen, and I may have been guilty of the same thing. So understanding, will put money in your pocket. Western Union® Auction Payments has received your email address from Andrew S Yuen to inform you of the order to have a $550.10 Western Union® Money OrderSM sent to you for:
Auction Item : Franklin Mint Sculptors Set Auction Site : eBay Auction Number: 2207051737
Please verify that the following address (as entered by the buyer) is correct.
Your Name: Jon Lerner Address : Scarsdale Coin 717 White Plains Road City : Scarsdale State : NY Zip Code : 10583 Country : USA
As a registered seller, all payments will be sent to the mailing address in your registration, avoiding delays with this order and with future payments. You will be able to view order status and history and update order information. You will also have access to payment buttons for your auction listings to let your buyers know you accept payments through Western Union Auction Payments.
This order is PENDING approval. Most orders are approved within hours of being placed; however, there may be exceptions. Some items may be considered high risk because of the item cost or description. These types of orders are subject to additional verification and may take longer to approve. You will receive an Order Approved email from us when this order is approved. You SHOULD NOT send this item to the buyer until you receive the confirmation email informing you that the order has been approved.
If your address information is correct and you do not wish to register, this will in no way affect the delivery of your payment once the order is approved.
Thank you for using Western Union Auction Payments. We look forward serving your online auction payment needs in the future.
I have arranged for payment through Western Union as requested. I intended to send $550 as I am not sure about the service charge on your end. However, the transfer somehow became $550.10. Please confirm upon receipt and advise how you would like to arrange for shipment. I would like to have this matter settled before Baron Yuen returns at the end of the week as this has been a rather upsetting experience for him.
Thanks and regards, Vivien Au-Yeung Assistant to Baron Yuen of Aveley

Goose, it's next to impossible to talk about international money transfers without bank accounts being mentioned. Other than his chatter about being a British lord, there's really nothing his "assistant" has written that is out of line.
BTW, Western Union money transfers can be counterfeited. When you receive it, check with WU to ensure that it is legit. I've not received payments via BidPay, but my payment notices do not list "Western Union® Money OrderSM" or "Western Union Auction Payments". My confirmations always come from "accounts@bidpay.com" and read like this:
<< <i>Dear Mark A. Kaiser,
This email is to confirm approval of your $123.45 money order for eBay item #nnnnnnnn to xxxxx. Your money order will be sent out by the end of the next business day after you receive this email.
We have forwarded your name and address in our confirmation email to the seller. Thank you for using the Western Union BidPay service. Please keep us in mind for your future auction purchases.
Interesting read. While in this case, I would wait until the MO is in hand, I typically ship BidPay shipments when I get notice from Western Union that it is confirmed. I think they even encourage immediate shipment on their website or in the e-mails (it has been awhile) and suggest it is one of the advantages of using the program.
Here's a Bidpay confirmation letter for comparison purposes (buyer X'd out).

This order is PENDING approval, you will receive a second email from us when this order is approved and you SHOULD NOT send this item to the buyer until you get the SECOND CONFIRMATION EMAIL from us that it has been approved.
IF THERE IS A MISTAKE IN YOUR ADDRESS YOU CAN CORRECT THIS IMMEDIATELY BY GOING TO THE FOLLOWING LINK AND REGISTERING WITH US - THERE IS NO NEED TO REPLY TO THIS EMAIL.
As a registered seller, all payments will be sent to the address you enter in your registration - and this will avoid delays with this order and any future payments.
Once you have registered you will be able to log your BidPay account using your primary email address and the password you chose for yourself - allowing complete access to your account and review all order details including: Buyers Information, address, payment information, auction order number, time and date of orders and BidPay.com order number.
You must register using this email address as your primary email address and you must reply to the confirmation email you will receive from us to activate your account.
If the address information is correct and for some reason you DO NOT wish to register, this will in no way affect the delivery of your payment being sent out once the order has been approved.
We look forward to being of service to you in the future.
The email seems legit....we will wait to see....if a Western Union Money Order arrives and if it is good.....
also please take a look at my updated fine print....I hope this is better than the old one.......I am taking suggestions for improvements on it......feel free to pm any suggestions
you spent alot of time - but so did Vivien if she actually did all the things she said
- got paypal verified - checked with their legal department about sending cash - countless emails - including trying to use a business partner in UT - western union
whatever business this guy is in, probably does not involve "ivory" anymore it makes sense to me to be interested in silver bullion -> last year at this time the metals looked like they were set to make a big run-up
it has been choppy last 12 months but once again, precious metals are looking good
I commend you for going out of your way to satisfy the buyer of your item, although, ironically enough, it seems to have been done more in self defense and for the humor factor than anything else. I hope it works out for you.
The fine print seems much, much easier to deal with in the new format. It may well result in more bids on your items.
My only slight quibble with the fine print is your lumping together of all grading services for the purpose of excluding those items from your return policy, as at least half of them will in no way make a buyer of a misgraded coin whole.
(As an aside, there is no way i would even consider bidding on an item that would require me to surrender a 15% "restocking fee" if i was justifiably unsatisfied with it.)
Other than that thanks for the very entertaining thread.
(I hope Her Royal Highness gets a copy of it sometime/somehow, or perhaps even joins the boards and meets us all at the ANA for those drinkees.)
I shall review your suggestions on the fine print........actually since we are PCGS/NGC dealers 99% of the coins I sell on ebay are in those holders...... but I see your point about other services........thanks for the suggestions... in terms of people bidding on our auctions.....we seem to have a great rate of bidders...most of my auctions start at 1 cent no reserve.....
Now for your morning update on his holy highness.....as of 8am EST no news...and no confirmation from Western Union......keep turning the pages.....

His eMail is originating from Hong Kong.
Jon,
I think your instincts are correct. This one smells very bad.

Dear Mr. Lerner,
I have arranged for payment through Western Union as requested.
Thanks and regards,
Vivien Au-Yeung

That is the standard Bidpay eMail. It's starting to look legit. Don't ship until you have the money order in hand, though.
Edited to add: You'll receive another eMail confirming approval.

<< <i>Anyone else notice that he/she/it continually remarks about your bank account!?!!!!!!! THAT is a red flag to me! >>
Sincerely,

also please take a look at my updated fine print....I hope this is better than the old one.......I am taking suggestions for improvements on it......feel free to pm any suggestions
new ebay auction with new fine print box
you spent alot of time - but so did Vivien if she actually did all the things she said
- got paypal verified
- checked with their legal department about sending cash
- countless emails - including trying to use a business partner in UT
- western union
whatever business this guy is in, probably does not involve "ivory" anymore
it makes sense to me to be interested in silver bullion -> last year at this time the metals looked like they were set to make a big run-up
it has been choppy last 12 months but once again, precious metals are looking good
I commend you for going out of your way to satisfy the buyer of your item, although, ironically enough, it seems to have been done more in self defense and for the humor factor than anything else.

Now for your morning update on his holy highness.....as of 8am EST no news...and no confirmation from Western Union......keep turning the pages.....
