1908 No Motto Saints

I was looking at common PCGS saints in a coin store. I went into the store for a 1908 PCGS No Motto MS64 , but when I saw the coin I was not impressed with the strike. I looked at another saint a 1927 PCGS MS64 and it had a much better strike. It even looked almost like a high relief, almost. it had much better eye appeal also. The dealer said that the 1908 no mottos all had weak strikes, and the latter issues just looked better and had better strikes. Is this true, or are there some 1908 No Mottos MS64 out there with nice strikes, or might I have to go with a MS65 to get a nice no motto example? both saints were the same price, $695 no tax, I took the 1927 since it had better eye appeal. I figured both were common, I can look for a better no motto saint next time. both holders were PCGS blue inserts with bar codes on the reverse.

    sumner1984,

Most 1908 No Motto pieces, even those graded MS65 and higher, will be inferior in terms of strike, to later issues, such as the 1927 that you mentioned. The scarcer 1907's (regular Saint Gaudens, not High Reliefs) are even more weakly struck than the 1908's, as a rule.
  • ok thanks. i will keep an eye out for the wells fargo, maybe that will have a better strike. but what you say coinguy1 makes alot of sence. I called RARCOA (www.rarcoa.com) asking about there no motto saints at $695. And the sales women tone of voice was like" are you sure you want that year, we have some other saints that are real nice in pcgs holders at the same price." I just got the feeling that the no mottos they had werent that nice, and alot of people send them back, that why she recommended another year. i didnt buy from them anyway, i went into a local coin shop here.

sumner1984, I was still at NGC when they graded literally thousands of the Wells Fargo 1908's - MS66's, MS67's, MS68's, etc. Even they were not sharply struck like many of the With Motto issues.
  • I don't know gold very well, but I did get an 08 NM NGC MS 64 on ebay a while back for under $600....has a decent but not "needle sharp" strike.
