The sea she is an unforgiving sort.......... This is what my father taught me. (my father a 23 year navy man). She does as she will, some will live some will die. She will take metal back to her womb. Some she will leave be.
Hmmm - if the silver halves were in tightly wrapped rolls that kept the edges of the coins held together long enough until the encrustations took over, couldn't the sea water damage be limited to the reeded edge?
ABC national news just did a story on this and stated that there may be as many as 20,000 gold and silver coins with payoff of up to $100 million. If this doesn't inject further interest in this hobby, I don't know what else will

Maybe Suze Orman will hype the gold on her show. That should help, too.
Rumor, and this is strictly rumor, has it that some of the silver coins may have been in mason jars, you know the kind used in canning veggie. Sounds possible, although I'm not quite sure when the mason jar was invented.
Even if they weren't in mason jars, I now believe that some sort of air-tight container may have helped preserve these coins.
Mason jars or not, I think finding GEM silver coins is very exciting and I believe the market will absorb them VERY quickly with only minor price disruption.
