Would You Try To Upgrade This 83cc crescent DMPL Morgan?

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's in a PCGS MS65 DMPL holder. IMO it's a nice solid to high end 65. I showed this to a few dealers including Mark Feld and they all love it and say they like it better than a lot of 66's out there. I don't play the crack-out or upgrade game. But curious what you folks would do? BTW, the obv is black and white cameo just like the reverse.... but was shot at a different angle to show the color. It's a very eye-appealing piece.

So what would you do?

i dont care much for the toning personally.
I might dip it if i thought it would improve it and wouldnt ruin it.

in other words i think the toning actually keeps it out of the upper 60s.

I would be able to make a better guess by the label type than from that picture.
    Unless you get closer pictures.

OK, so far we got one that needs to see what label holder it's in (I'm poking fun here) and one for DIP IT.

Man, look what the slabbing and "Curating" industry has done. This is sad. Can't give an opinion till one knows the color of the label, or until after it's dipped. It's been fun guys.image

it's beautiful regardless of the holder, and if I intended to keep it a while, I'd leave it be. If you're going to sell it, it might be worth a crack and resubmit first, doubtful it'll come back less than 65 again, unless you scratch it breaking the slab. image And it might make 66 someday, if not now.

Thanks Baley, you can say all that without knowing the color of the label? OK I better stop or Placid is gonna get upset with me. Just having fun Placid really. But I refuse to tell you the color of the labelimage

My opinion from the picture it looks 64 because the strike is weak.
The right eagles wing top is bald the eagles breast feathers are weak. The hair above the ear on the obverse is weak as well as the hair above the eye, liberty is incomplete. The 1 in the date has big mark across it image

If people who have looked at the coin in hand said it looks better than some 66's they have seen then yes it probably has a good chance at getting a upgrade.

Hey that's better now Placid. The only weak part of strike is a bit over her ear. But what's funny is I read a lot on here about people keeping coins out of 65 for just a bit weak strike. When in reality there are a ton of 65 and 66 out there in the real world with very weak strikes.

OK, It's a blue label with bar-code in front. So it can't upgrade because it's not an old green holder right?image

Nice looking coin, stman. Toned dmpl's are hard enough to find, and a cc mintmark to boot!
If you are planning on selling it, you could try the crack-out game......but I understand it's pretty tough to get a 66. NGC might give it the star, and that would increase it's value even as a 65.
If you are keeping it, I agree with Baley and just enjoy owning a really cool coin!

I need to run. Just to let you folks know, I won't try to upgrade it as I like the coin as is. It's graded correctly IMO and probably high end for the grade. And that's the type of coins I like to own.

Thanks for the good words on the coin and Hadleydog is correct, DMPL with color are tough, add the CC mint mark and they are really tough to find.

I was just curious what other people would do.

what if a respectable dealer or friend told you if curated properly it would easily make a 66,
would you even consider that move?

Cam, In all reality I don't need a dealers opinion whether it would upgrade or not. Besides any dealer that told me to dip it I'd probably slap them. Not in a million years would I dip this coin.

    ok.
i just thought you were more interested in an upgrade and making a bigger profit like so many here.

if you really like the coin, why crack it and try for an upgrade then sell.

its either a keeper for or its not.

still not sure what your really getting at with asking about upgrading it if not interested in selling it.

....anyway...whatever floats the ol boat i suppose.

I know I'm late to the party, but if Mark Feld and/or others believe it's a 66 in a 5 holder I'd get it upgraded, or at least try too. I know you don't like the crack-out game but why leave money on the table later in life when it comes time to sell?

I hate the thought it is a Dealer that'll make out well on the aquisition of this Morgan instead of your greaving wife.

A super looking coin but I think 65 is the limit with the apparent chatter on liberty's face area the weak strie area does not hurt too much but it does not help. The way I look at is- if I was looking to buy this coin would I grade it a 66? mike image

There's a difference between "liking" a coin than a lot of 65's, because of the eye appeal, and "liking" the coin because it has a shot to upgrade. Which "liking" were they referring to?

A lot of people really "liked" the Benson coins, but that didn't mean the hairlined 62's were shot 65 coins.

You know all this, I'm just throwing a wrench image

As for your coin, it's very nice, but I'm not going to even guess at the upgrade chance from a scan of a dmpl.

I like it as a 66, because it looks better than most 65's I've seen and as good as many 66's.

Another of my uneducated opinions, but:

The heck with what other 65s and 66s look like - I like it as a PROPERLY graded 65, with nice color. I wouldn't chance even the pros cracking and reslabbling (if they want to give it a market 66), but, I don't think they will. Why? It's a gem with color at 65DMPL and should garner a premium on those issues; at 66DMPL - well, I think that grade (66DMPL) is asking a bit much.

    Agreed!

You shouldn't worry about the price, though, because you shouldn't sell this beauty!

    Except to me.

The coins I have liked the best over the years are the ones that are a joy to pick up and gaze upon and wonder why they aren't in a higher holder. On the few times I've upgraded them, a bit of the mystique and wonderment goes away and they aren't quite as special.

Leave it where it is, enjoy it and if you ever go to sell just ask full 66 money for it.

I agree with TDN or if you must send it back in the holder, they will upgrade it if it warrants (i've had a morgan 66 go to 67 in the holder)
