Good software?

Greetings wise and all-knowing experts. I was wondering what software some of you use to catalog your collections and if you could recommend one for me. I created a custom database in Access that I use and its not to bad, but I was looking for something better. Any ideas?

MS Excel. At least thats what I used back when I was collecting certified coins.

Thanks Russ. I went to the site and it looks promising. I will wait to hear from others. One thing did concern me though, here is a quote from their web site:

I use Microsoft Access and track purchases and inventory. I built my own database and functionality. It's a work in process.

Used Coin Elite for years. Nice software but has a few glitches.

Created my own in Excel about a year ago.

I also use Microsoft Access.

It has everything from prices, cost, taxes, invoice sheets, and missing lists. When I go to a show, all I have to do is print out the missing sheet.

Very useful if you know a lot about Access. All of my coins are assigned a number, which is good for tracking theft or lost items.

Thanks to my college computer course, I was able to pull off a huge database.

I might hand it out to Canadian dealers when I'm done with it.

Note: Canadian coins only!

MS Excel or Corel Quattro Pro (predecessor to MS Excel). For a collector, a workbook works better than a database, IMHO. For a dealer, a database probably would work better than a workbook.

Excel

Alot of flexibility and if you want to play the registry point game you can add in the weights and do the what if scenarios quite easily to see what the impact is.

I created my own Access database also. US coins only. I entered all of the regular issue coins and common varieties from the redbook with mintages. That took a while.

I also use NumisExpert. Tried a couple different systems, but this one works well.

I used CoinManage 2003 (still do for some tasks), but shifted to Access after exporting the template from CoinManage. I built a handy GUI frontend for Access and tend to stay in that app nowadays.

It seems most people use Access and create their own databases like I have. Think I might just stick with the one I have created.

I would be interested in seeing what other people's Access databases look like. Mine is being modified at the moment.

CoinManage 2003, but I'm not sure that I recomend using it. . . .after updating from 2002, much of my original data was lost and I've yet to find the time to go thru my entire collection. It does, however, have nice export feartures.

With Access, I'm trying to figure out how to auto-fill some of the fields. I want to be able to enter a vendor name and have it fill in some of the information I need.

I finally bought CoinManage 2003 after several years of using thier CoinManage Lite program (which was free and they took off the web site about five years ago). I imported my old files and didn't really loose any data but it rearranged things for me. It dumped all my separate collections into one default collection. I still haven't gone through the whole thing yet either to get it back in order.

I've tried several packages over the years including Coin Elite and what they now call NumisExpert. I liked Coin Manage the best. Coin Elite was ok but I was already familiar with CoinManage at the time. I tried 2-3 more that aren't worth mentioning. I did write my own Access database to track my ebay purchases but then I move the data to Coin Manage.

NumisExpert was awkward to use and their customer support stinks. After posting my opinion of this package on RCC got a reply from one of the guys at NumisExpert who tried to make me look like an idiot. He ended up posting my home email address to the newsgroup. This was one I don't use publicly in forums. So much for their promise of not diclosing your personal information. To be fair, the software was in beta form when I used it and may be better now. Their support is really bad though and I wouldn't trust them with my personal info.
