What exactly does a star note designate?

MadMarty · December 2, 2003 11:27AM

A star note is a replacement note for one that has been returned damaged.

A replacement sheet of currency that duplicates destroyed serial numbers. I don't personally find any premium value with the newer stuff, but the older gold and silver notes of way-back are quite a bit more valuable as star notes. Current day star notes are a dime a dozen.

I believe the original note was pulled from circulation and that ones a copy serial number

<<Star Notes are actually replacement notes substituted by the Bureau of Printing and Engraving when dollar bills are made with Errors or Misprints. >>

I hope this helps

The presence of a star in the serial number area of a piece of currency indicates that the original note was damaged or defective and the star note is its replacement.

I think.

It's easier and less time consuming to replace damaged or misprinted notes with star notes than it is to go back and reset the numbers.
