Some better pics of the gold find/photography setup/+2 others(big pics!!)

coinlieutenantcoinlieutenant Posts: 9,329 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just spent about two hours photographing the gold from the other day plus the other two pieces in the collection.

For the gent that was asking about gold techniques, these were taken outside at dusk using white balancing. Spot metering was used.
I simply sat on a chair, put the coins in one of the drawers from the coin cabinet, braced my elbows on my knees and was around 9 inches away from the coin. I used the 'macro' scene setting on the camera (Nikon Coolpix 5400).

The pictures are decent but not of the caliber that some (Shylock, WWW, airplanenut and others) take...
Shylocks recommendation is OTT lites with tripod.

Enjoy.

So you're the one hoarding all the early gold. That is waaaaay too much gold for one person. Please send me the first three coins and I'll send you some late date copper coins in the same condition.image

Some day I hope to get a 1811 half eagle, that is one very cool coin. Since you mixed different denominations, what are the first two coins? Quarter eagles? Half eagles? Eagles?

Oooh! I made the caliber list image

I'm yet to try otts... I just can't see myself shelling out $80 for two lights, when desk lamps are working ok right now... a few desk lamps should work fine- flood lights will help reduce a concentrated glare on a slab.

My first love...early U.S. gold image. Nice pictures coinlieutenant. Those coins with the little, scrawny eagles are tough image.

BTW, why the major difference in coloration between the obverse and reverse on the 1813 Half Eagle?
