I am stupified. Sheesh, it took me 3 months to get the courage to buy my 1799 Eagle and you pick off 5 early gold coins in one shot. Thanks for sharing. You're type set if going to be outstanding.
By the way, Lieutenants must make a lot more these days than they used to!

As far as the story, here is how I related it to RYK when I first found out about it.
I went to the post office to pick up that 1881 quarter eagle that I bought from Legend. As I was walking in, I saw an old local collector that I knew and said hello. He said hello too and asked how the collecting was going. I said "good" and that I was actually going to pick up a coin for approval at that very time and asked him if he would like to see it. He said yes, so I showed him as soon as I got it in his Jeep. We got to talking and he told me that if I was interested in gold that he had a 1929 Half eagle in PCGS XF40 that he wanted to sell. I told him I might be interested and that we should get together. He gave me his number. I called a couple of days later and saw the coin, told him I wanted it and arranged to pay him on Thursday and pick it up then.
I told him I would show him the rest of my collection then as well. He said he was looking forward to it.
I show up with my collection (only two gold pieces, my 1881 AU55 Quarter Eagle PCGS, and my 1895 NGC PF65 UCAM Quarter Eagle) plus the high end silver type...
First we did the deal on the 5$ Indian. I had offered three hundred dollars more than the local dealer had offered him so he was happy and so was I. Finished with the business first and then moved onto the pleasure.
I showed him my stuff first. He really liked the proof gold and had already seen the 1881. You could tell he was old school as the only other one he really liked in silver was the 1857 PCGS PF64 CAM Quarter (my only bright white coin). Toning did nothing for him...
Then he started with his little bag of goodies.
First thing he shows me is a raw 1796 LIHERTY Cent. Totally original pleasing Fine 15 coin.
Then he whips out three raw gold dollars in VF/XF, a 1849 open wreath and then a closed wreath of the same date + a nice 1853-O.
He proceeds to say next "how do you like private mint gold?" I say "I like it just fine, do you have any?"
Out comes a Betchler 5$ gold in raw VF, then a Clark Gruber 1861 PCGS VF25 Quarter Eagle, and a AU58 slider UNC 1853 San Fran Assay 20$ gold piece!!!
By this time I'm excited and trying to not pee my pants as his bag still had alot of stuff in it.
Then he shows me a nice PCGS AU53 Classic Head 5$, followed by a GORGEOUS red gold 1813 PCGS AU50 Capped bust 5$, proceeded by a way undergraded PCGS VF35 1811 Capped Bust Right 5$, and finally a PCGS AU53 1805 Prooflike Turban Head five.
Just to send me over the edge he throws down a 1803 PCGS AU53 Eagle that had the BEST strike I had ever seen on the reverse, no adjustment marks...
Then he says to me...."All of it is for sale, if you want it that is..."
That is the story... and today I went back to get the coins... I would have bought more but I ran out of money VERY quickly... He said that he wants to sell the rest off over the course of the next year, all of it... I leave for Hawaii in Jan 05 after graduation so I am going to be saving all of my duckies to buy it one piece at a time...
Was very blessed to be able to buy the collection. Most of the collection was bought in 1972 and was off the market for ages... FRESH!! Best of all, both parties were very happy and the deal was fair. He offered one coin to me that I told him was too low... and I offered some money on one coin that he said was too much.... you dont see that very often.
Got a good collection and made a good friend. What a great day!!!
What a great hobby. These coins will always be extra special because of the circumstances plus a new friend too...the way it should be. Congratulations.

I am happy for you...that is a once in a lifetime chance and it sounds like you are treating him fairly and he is treating your fairly. Much better for him than a dealer or the hassle of ebay (sounds like he is older and may not want to work on other ways to sell them) and it sounds like he treasures a collector enjoying the coins as much as he probably has.
How did I miss this thread!!! Wow, fantastic coins. Congratulations! Please let me know where this collector is so that I can get some of his stuff too. Is the 1811 available now that you've had it for so long?
