Littleton Coin...

Anyone seen this commercial on TV? They're selling 1921 Morgan's on So. Cal TV. Of course their pitch includes phrases such as "how rare they are," "most of them were melted down,", etc. They must have a large hoard of "G" coins. Either way I think it's good publicity for the coin industry...

    Nope, but there isn't a company on earth that doesn't exaggerate claims in order to make sales. I hope they are successful. It can be good for the hobby.

    I always have a problem with businesses that do not offer value to the customer. No matter how you try to rationalize free markets and capitalism, selling items that have nominal values with slick marketing is unethical.

    It definitely can help the hobby. It raises visibility and awareness. Especially since they are not going after the typical collector but the fringe collecting groups. There is no such thing as a walmart of coins so you're not going to find television ads of coins at rock bottom prices with a smiley face. (think of base price plus ad costs plus production costs plus other overhead) And I'd rather see Littleton selling 1921 morgans that are real than the NCM selling junk that is truly misrepresented.

    Also, places like Littleton, who is going after a television audience, have to sell common stuff. That way there is enough in stock. I mean, how ridiculous is it to sell something on TV where you may have only one item that looks like it? Television ads work by bulk and awareness. Coin Vault may sell overpriced things, too, but look at how many people they brought to the hobby.

    Sure, it isn't fun to find out that the coins aren't worth what you paid (we've all been there) but we have that learning experience everywhere in every field.

    Littleton sucks more than any other coin company.

    They typically have the highest of all pricing. I wrote them an email once, and they responded that the reason they charge so much is to bring the buyer a large selection of coins. I told them that a buyer could simply shop around other coin dealers and obtain the same pieces at HALF of their cost. They didn't disagree. Stay away from these scam artists everyone!

    From what you said they aren't scam artists. They were honest in answering you. Same argument can be said for convenient stores which charge sometimes twice as much for something as Walmart does. No one calls them scam artists. Just people who price for their market. Same with airport restaurants and such.

    When Littleton starts selling coins in airports, I'll stop thinking they're gouging the unspecting and unknowledgeable.
