Well, I had some of my late mother's morgans looked at today by a dealer in my town. They were 1880, 83,84,89 and 1890 all P's. The better of the 5 is the 1889 very sharp little wear. BUT, the dealer said that it appears to him the the 1880,89 and 90 have been cleaned.
As far as I know none of the dollars have ever been out of the sealed holders. I guess this means I've got junk now huh?

What do you mean by sealed holder? Are they gsa's?
Cleaned coins still have value just not as much as uncleaned.

Hi,

None of these dollars have ever been graded. They are in plastic holders closed shut with staples. As far as I know thay have never been opened at least not by me. I can only tell you that my mother had saved these back years ago.

Junk? I don't think so. What you are holding there is priceless for sentimental value. Coins don't have to be mint state to be enjoyable. A nice keepsake I would think.

Don't beive everything a dealer tells you. There are many good honest dealers and many bad dishonest ones. If they think you are looking to sell the bad ones will say things that are just wrong so you will sell for less money than you should.
I would get at least one other dealers opinion or send then to anacs for grading.

The best coins are the ones you get from parents, grandparents, etc. Don't worry about what they're worth in dollars, because it really doesn't matter.

Some very rare VAM's (Varities) in 1880; could be worth considerable money; even cleaned. The 1889 has one or two as well.

Welcome to th forums and to the wonderful world of coin collecting. Your coins are not junk. They are nice pieces of history, and in your case they are also tremendous sentimental heirlooms.

You can try getting them graded, if you want. Otherwise just enjoy them as they are. Try doing some investigating, like getting a Redbook and reading about them. Morgan Dollars are cool. As are most coins....

His words, " they're nice coins but of no value to any serious collector. I've got plenty of junk like this in the back. I'm sure that to someone who don't know anything about coins would think your stuff were great pieces....sorry." Just kind of hit me the wrong way ya know?

Those type of guys/gals you stay far away from them. As soon as they make such an obtuse statement as above, you know you're dealing with a J/O or a con man. Did he make an offer?

Not to worry. That's a line that dealers learn at the "How to be a coin dealer" workshop. It's the opening in every chapter of the training manual.

I was thinking along the lines of Outhaul. My favorite Morgan is a worn 1889-O given to me by my grandfather, the best guy in the world. That coin I will never part with.

Yes, he made an offer said he'd take all 5 off my hands for about 40 bucks. All I wanted was to find out the condition of the Morgans and a possible grade. I may send the nice one the 1889 to be graded by some one who knows what they are taking about. Thanks for the welcome!!!!
