In praise of raw coins (with some big pics)

You all know me, I like slabs. I still do -- and I still slab whatever I want. But I must offer a verse in praise of raw coins! I mean, where else can you find a 1964 year set from the world fair with colors like those below cheap? And where can you find a whole series of superb coins like the 40s and 50s jeffersons for only a couple of bucks each max? And where can you buy your first 1940s proof for $30 or so?

What else has the thrills of the hit and the sorrows of the miss? What else has the challenge to outwit your opponents? What else forces you to really understand what you're looking at? Yes, there is great fun in raw coins, too! And raw is much friendlier to the wallet for those of us who think about such things.

Raw coins are good because they retain more of their vitamins than cooked ones.

OK, I'll be serious. They are cheaper that slabbed coins, which is nice, and if one can accurately grade coins they can really save money, which of course means more coins.

I prefer to keep raw coins in Kointains, which are fabulous. The coin is well protected, and you can still get up-close and personal with it.
