well i like both i like the bottom one better as less marks and a really nice no brainer high end ms66 but i love the color and eye appeal on the top one better and it is to me a ms66
also i cant tell from the scans but it appears to me that the bottom one is more full bell line than the top one!!??

Both coins are overpriced right now, with the second coin being waaaaaaaay over. A nice example of an MS66FBL 1963 half can be had for less than $2000. That's one date that would make me a little queasy to obtain because of the sheer size of the mintage - over 67 million. And while I grant that most of them are of crappy condition, I'll gladly take an MS65FBL at $100 and wait out the grading game on the MS66FBL.
When you look at Franklins in MS66FBL, you're allowed a minor degree of chatter, with maybe one slightly noticeable mark on the coin as long as it's not in a prime focal area.
If we take Don's picture as marked above (thanks Don) you can see that this coin, though I would call it at the bottom rung of the MS66FBL spectrum, qualifies as an MS66FBL. Gilbert said it best - an MS66 coin is by no means a perfect coin. This coin clearly shows that minor hits are mainly limited in the obverse to the hair and the coat of Franklin's bust. Minute hits in this area, as long as there aren't too many, and not plainly visible to the naked eye, qualifies a Franklin for MS66. On the reverse we see pretty much the same thing. Were it not for what I deem to be the only major hit on the coin, which IS in a prime focal area but is still relatively small, this would be a very pleasant MS66 coin. My main objection to this coin are what appear to be roll marks on the face. I've seen many a coin get downgraded for this type rub marks. As for the weak Pass and Stow, you have to remember that not every coin in the Franklin series was struck with a strong Pass and Stow. Certain years, particularly in the late 40's and early 50's did indeed have a strong Pass and Stow. However, coins struck in the 60's are notorious for weakness in this area, as well as in the strength of the bell lines, therefore you can't quite hold these coins to the same standards as the early ones. The dies were different and the detail wasn't brought up as much in these later coins as they were earlier in the series.
That being said - I stick to my previous statement. This is a nice coin sure enough, but in my mind it doesn't warrant the nearly $2000 hike in price over a nice MS65FBL. Bytheway - here's my MS65FBL - There are some hits in the hair, and unfortunately some roll marks which, while they don't show in the picture, are present. The reverse is 10 times better than either of the coins in question here - but alas that doesn't count. I'll still stick with mine
While I think Frank's 63d is very nice, and perhaps worthy of a 66, I still find no reason why both coins should not be in 66 holders. They are defintely premium examples of an other wise ugly date. Both have well above average strikes and considerably less hits than neccessary. I have seen several 66 that had far more hits and distractions and they still belong in 66 holders. Remember the larger the coin the more hits it will have.
As far as the prices, I personally hope they sell at that price then maybe I can get $2000 for mine. However I think over $2000 is too much for this date. At least until a 67FBL is made.
