Mis-strike?

Hi all,

I found this 1987 Lincoln in a bag of pennies my mother had saved. It looks like maybe an off center strike? the "L" in Liberty is missing and there is a huge ridge on the left hand side of the coin. Sorry for the image...it was scanned. A digital camera maybe coing at Christmasimage

    That is not an off center strike. The missing "L" might be from a grease filled die.

    Not an off-center, not a grease filled die. The die is failing and sinking in an arc along the perimeter of the coin. For some reason this is rather common on cent dies since they introduced the copper plated zinc composition. It was sometimes seen on the earlier copper coins but became much more common with the Zincolns. When the die sinks there is less pressure in that area and the image does not come up.

    The sinking of the die that Conder mentioned is what creates the ridge that you mentioned. The ridge is the giveaway as to what it is. image
