2003 Silver Sets and the COA - A minor Observation

What gives....
I used to post as Slackett....lost my password and boogered my account.

Anyway, long ago, as Slackett, I posted some ebay math on the 1999 proof sets (while they were increasing at a crazy pace).

Today, I did another small sampling on the 2003 Silver Proof Sets and the Error COA. I won't address the 'weak 3' here....those are all keepers IMHO (especially the early strikes). Here goes:

Of a dozen sets sold with NO MENTION of the COA - Average sell price was $38.20
Of a dozen sets sold with MENTION of the Error COA - Average sell price was $51.40
Many sellers are selling ONLY THE ERROR COA, no coins - Average sell price was 16.90
One buyer bought an Error COA (no coins) for $27.66 plus $2.00 shipping YIKES
Another buyer bought an error COA, a correct COA, and the US Mint apology letter (no coins) for $36.99 plus $4.00 shipping WOW
One seller is selling COPIES of his US Mint Apology Letter OH MAN (This seller gets my vote!)

Please...tell me this COA fad will go away. A coin error is cool, a US Mint paper error just doesn't hold any cool factor to me....

Thoughts??

Also...Based on POP numbers, just how many original 1999-2003 silver sets still exist?

I'm sure it's just a fad. It would be really easy to fake these, too.

I guess the error COA might be a curiosity in the future, but I do not see it having any staying power. It's not too surprising that it would be a hot item on ebay now, though.

I wonder if anyone will be selling "investor lots" of 5 or 10 error COAs.

If the Mint never makes a similar COA mistake, the 2003 error could become a
sought-after item. If this becomes a regular quality-control problem, the rarity
factor will diminish with each new mistake.

A questions and comment if I may:

Why do you think these are real errors. I have two sets and many say they are on the clad sets as well?

Also...Based on POP numbers, just how many original 1999-2003 silver sets still exist?
I only have two of each, silver and clad for my two kids, but I'm guessing there are thousands of sets out there

I'm not an error collector but many are. This is the chance for all who want one to have their very own acknowledged error. Ya gotta admit, the Ghost 3, although common, is neat.

I have a bunch of those inflatable packing bags and some styrofoam peanuts from the U.S. Mint. Will sell for $25 each.

One of the styrofoam peanuts is an error. It was supposed to be shaped like an "S" but instead, it's more like a "J". I call it the "wounded 3-legged peanut". Probably the only one like it. $500

I bought 2 Silver 2003 Proof Sets earlier this year. Both are the error, with the wrong COA. I thought the US Mint was sending out replacment COA's, but I have never seen one come. Did they do this? Did anyone else receive replacment COA's? Do I need to contact the US Mint to get the correct COA's?

I got mine with a letter sayin Opps. Just going to keep it as a neat piece of paper. Maybe my Great Neph. will profit from it.
