Coin of the day proposal... November 24, 2003

Hello all,

One thing that I would like to see more of on the boards is numismatic study items. I find that one of the things I enjoy doing the most with coins is studying individual dates. I love to learn strike characteristics, pricing eccentricities (spreads etc), ease of sale, luster characteristics, die states, varieties, relative demand for the coin, sightseen vs sight unseen markets, PCGS vs NGC grading patterns on the coin, whatever...

I have found that there are many different things to look at on individual dates of series that will make that coin worth more to the consciencious collector compared to a different one.

Since there is a vast wealth of knowledge on these boards I would like harness that with the posting of an individual coin posted at the start of each day.

We have these educational threads from time to time, mostly by chance, but if we could make it a daily occurance, I think it would benefit most of us.

The way it might work is as follows:

The first person to post a thread in the form "Coin of the day....DD/MM/YY....Date/series" will decide on the coin to be discussed. A picture would be a plus but not a necessity.

It is NOT a requirement that you know anything about the coin if you happen to be the poster of the day, just something that you are interested in learning more about.
If you happen to have something to say about the individual coin, great!!! If not, then sit back and watch as various other people post the experiences that they have had with it. Participation is encouraged!!!! Especially dealers!!

Over time, we will have a database of dates/coins that can be quickly researched by typing in the date in the search window on the boards!!! What a great reference, without one person doing all of the work!!!!

I will start us out with a thread right after I post this one and we can see where it goes and how much participation we get.
I will apologize in advance if this was a stupid idea... image

I feel it's a great idea as well. More Numismatic material would increase the value of this board immensely.

That would be a great idea; I love hearing what everyone has to say about coins!

And if they know what they are talking about, that's even betterimage

John, I like your idea a lot.

It is often extremely difficult to get things organized on a forum such as this - please give it a try and DO NOT get discouraged if it is slow and/or a struggle. I'm sure you know, in advance, that threads of the type you are proposing, are much less active than flame threads.image

coinlieutenant/John: Great idea but a coin of the day might be too often. It might take a day or two to locate the book to look up a specific coin's attribute or god forbid, I might want to work that day. image

Perhaps having three coins of the week might work better? Possibly one gold, one silver and one copper so no one feels left out? This way we don't get nuts about responding by the minute.

Also the flame throwers would not feel left out as you could also have a three flames of the week post?image

    Will give this a try...

If once a day turns out to be too much, then will go to Oreville's suggestion.

Hope this turns out good and benefits everyone.
