PCGS price guide vs Coin World trends

I noticed there is a big differnce in prices between these two sources. One coin I noticed in particular is an 1857 1cent flying eagle MS63. I just purchased one in a PCGS slab. Trends lists the coin for 1000.00 and PCGS guide has it listed at 650.00. What source is more accurate? (I paid 535.00 for the flying eagle, and I always look at my purchases as an investment so I am trying to decide if I got a good deal or not).

my guess is that your flying eagle cent is valued at $535. After all, that is the price that a willing seller and a willing buyer (you) made a transaction recently. Another way to say it is your coin is worth what someone is now willing to pay YOU for that coin. The price guides are, in fact, ONLY guides. They no way can tell you what you can get for YOUR coin. Enjoy it, and good luck. Steveimage

That price may be a little high for an average PCGS-63 1857, however, if the coin is super nice and high end, then it was probably a good buy. Depends on the quality of the coin in question.

If you're concerned, then I would do a search on completed auctions to see how the price you paid compares. I have to continually remind myself to do that instead of relying too much on the price guides. FWIW, I subscribe to CW and they are almost always higher than any other price guide for Morgans. Of course, I just did a BIN on a 1880-CC which was about the same price as listed in CW. Oh well...I wanted the coin and was willing to pay a few dollars more.

I just wanted to add that if you search the slab numbers you might even find an auction result for your exact coin. mike

Thanks for all the responses. I purchased the coin last week on ebay and havn't seen the coin in person yet. Hopefully I will get it by Monday.
