I don't think any of them really suffer from a survival rate, but I will say that GEM Franklins are quite scarce...

I think any circulated Frnklin is very ugly, I enjoy these GEMs in the fully struct mint fresh beauty...
When they start getting wear, forget it...

That said I believe the 55 Franklins pulled from mint sets tend to be the ugliest coins out there, they typically are a ugly
black road tar toned color.... Its tough to find a decent GEM with nice eye appeal, and when you do, its something special.

I believe the 55 Franklins pulled from mint sets tend to be the ugliest coins out there, So true. In fact my ugliest Franklin is a '55 (65FBL). It is not in my registry set, but the one that is, a 66FBL, is one of the nicest '55s I've even seen (it is a beauty), and is the nicest 66FBL I've seen.

All dates survive in large numbers, but when you get to MS65 and up, and further when you add FBL the picture changes. The '53-S is one of the most common Franklins in MS 65, yet when you add FBL to the mix, no date is even remotely close.

Most collections have a coin that could be upgraded or improved upon and the Birmingham Frankies are no exception. You ask which coins had the worse survival rates, and I think the concensus is that coins in MS65FBL and above are few and far in between. You will still find the odd original roll or the odd mint set that contains a gem Frankie in it, but for the most part what you find is MS63 quality and below. In my opinion, Franklins are getting scarce in the higher grades. The pop reports are deceiving because so many have been cracked and re-submitted as a result of the huge jump from MS64FBL/MS65 to MS65FBL and above. Their day will come.

As for my ugly duckling right now - I'd have to say it's this one. The toning isn't flattering, I believe it came out of the end of a roll. Still it graded PCGSMS66FBL, and with less than 30 graded, I couldn't pass it up. I wish I had kept it's predecessor, a gorgeous blast white example, but alas, you can't keep'em all! image

Frank, I think that '49-S 66FBL PL is the worst franklin you own. You should dumped that thing. I'll even help to take it off your hands so you don't have to go through the hassle of finding someone that would want it.image
